No other avian influenza cases reported in Schleswig-Holstein
Kiel – After the outbreak of avian influenza in two goose fattening farms in the Schleswig-Flensburg district, no further cases were initially reported in this region.
                            goose farm

"We have no further reports," said a spokeswoman for the Ministry of Agriculture on Monday. Avian influenza hit two goose farms with a total of almost 18,000 animals last week. All had to be killed.

According to the ministry, this is the largest outbreak of the highly contagious animal disease in the country so far this year. In order to prevent the spread to other companies, a restricted area and an observation area with a radius of about ten kilometers were set up around both farms within a radius of three kilometers.

Meanwhile, the Friedrich Loeffler Institute in the Pinneberg district confirmed a case of bird flu in a gannet on Helgoland. Numerous dead wild birds of this species have been found on the offshore island in recent weeks.

Wild birds are thought to be carriers of the disease. In the past few weeks, cases of avian influenza had increased among wild birds. According to the Loeffler Institute, the H5N1 virus variant was detected in almost 1,000 dead wild birds in Germany in the first half of the year. The coastal regions with their breeding areas are particularly affected. In addition, outbreaks in poultry and kept birds were registered in 31 domestic animal stocks.

The district of Vechta reports a new case of avian influenza in the Dinklager urban area. A company in the Langwege farm is affected. As a precaution, the authority ordered the killing of all 119,930 laying hens on Thursday. The veterinary office has commissioned a special company. The killing of all animals in the herd, which is necessary under health law, is carried out under the animal welfare supervision of the veterinary office, according to the statement.

The district had reported the first avian influenza case in the Dinklager farming community last week. 110,000 animals from the affected farm were killed.

                                Federal institute proves pathogens

The outbreak in the Langweg barn has had a massive impact on other poultry farmers. With a general decree, the district has defined a protection zone with a radius of 3 kilometers around the outbreak site. Birds, eggs or carcasses may no longer be transported in this area. In addition, the authority sets up a surveillance zone with a radius of 10 kilometers. The district of Vechta has published the general decree on its website .

According to the authority, the veterinary office had initially sent samples from the affected company to the disease experts at the Friedrich Löffler Institute (FLI). On Thursday morning, investigations confirmed the outbreak. The Federal Institute's laboratory had detected the H5N1 virus in the company.
