The Finnish Food Safety Authority has announced the completion of its inspections of the nation's fur farms, noting that bird flu has been detected at three further locations.

The latest confirmed case of the virus was found in Merikarvia, in the region of Satakunta, following two other discoveries last month.

Bird flu was first detected at a fur farm during the summer, and has since been found on a total of 32 farms across five regions.

In August, the Food Safety Authority announced plans to inspect all 400-plus fur farms located across Finland over concerns about the spread of bird flu, and especially the potential that it could mutate into a disease that can infect humans.

The first state of the nationwide inspection by the authority focused on mink farms, as bird flu in mink pose a greater threat to humans than infections in other fur animals.

Mink are susceptible to infection by both avian and human viruses, making the semiaquatic animals a high-risk host for a bird flu virus to effectively mutate.

Inspectors collected samples from 111 mink farms across the country since August, of which three were found to have bird flu infections. This brought the total number to eight, as the virus had been detected on five mink farms during the summer...
