H5 avian influenza: second infection with the highly pathogenic avian influenza virus confirmed in a turkey farm in Wervik

A second outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza was observed on a commercial farm in Wervik (province of West Flanders). The farm is located within the 10 km zone that was demarcated following the January 20 contamination . A 3 km protection zone and a 10 km surveillance zone will be established around the new focus, overlapping the existing zones. These areas are located partly in the province of Hainaut and on the territory of France.

In order to avoid any further spread of the virus, and in accordance with European and Belgian legislation, the poultry and birds still present are euthanized.

In these areas, strict biosecurity measures are imposed. Anyone detecting signs of disease in their poultry or birds should consult a veterinarian.

The FASFC reminds all Belgian poultry farmers and private owners that the bird flu virus has already been circulating a lot since September among wild birds . Therefore, the risk of contamination of poultry by avian influenza following contact with wild birds is high.
