Avian influenza confirmed on wild birds of Lake Geneva
Berne, 12.11.2016 - The bird flu virus has been confirmed in the Lake Constance region and has recently been confirmed on wild birds found dead on Lake Geneva (Vaud). The Federal Office for Food Safety and Veterinary Affairs (OSAV) constantly adapts the necessary measures and extends the delimitation of control zones in order to avoid contamination of domestic poultry. There is no evidence that this virus is transmissible to humans.
A duck duck and a laughing gull found dead in the port of Lausanne (Vaud) were diagnosed positive for the avian influenza virus, specifically the H5N8 strain. This discovery comes a few days after that of similar cases on the shores of Lake Constance.
In view of the increased risks in areas where migratory waterbirds live, recent prevention measures must be strengthened around all the largest Swiss lakes: the first kilometer of the lakeshore is strengthened in a control zone where any contact between the lakes Poultry and migratory birds should be avoided. Failing this, the poultry must be confined in enclosed spaces or housing systems with a watertight roof and lateral bulkheads.
The OSAV will therefore adapt its order at the beginning of next week. Depending on the evolution of the situation, the FSO will further strengthen these measures. The aim is to avoid any contamination of domestic poultry.
At present, no infected poultry farming
Great vigilance is required and poultry keepers are advised to follow the instructions issued by the OSAV. People who find dead bodies of wild birds are advised not to touch them and to inform the wildlife supervisors, fisheries guardians or the cantonal police.
There is no indication at present that Swiss poultry farms are infected with avian influenza. According to the information available, the H5N8 subtype virus is not transmissible from animals to humans.
