A case of monkeypox has been registered in Ukraine

    September 15, 2022

On September 15, the first case of monkeypox was laboratory confirmed in Ukraine. Currently, the patient is hospitalized in a medical institution for inpatient treatment, he has a mild course of the disease. It was possible to diagnose the disease thanks to the PCR study, which was conducted by the Regional Center for Disease Control and Prevention of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine. Epidemiological investigation of this case is currently underway.

According to the patient, he had no contacts with monkeypox patients and had not traveled abroad. Nevertheless, the appearance of symptoms of the disease and the preliminary results of collecting an epidemiological history indicate that the patient was infected in one of the large cities of the country. Among the symptoms of the disease, he has a high temperature, a rash on his body. In order to preserve the comfort of the patient, the area of registration of the case is not indicated.

We will remind you that monkeypox is a smallpox-like disease caused by viruses of the poxvirus family. It is similar to smallpox, but has a lower lethality and milder symptoms.

Until 2022, monkeypox was recorded in Central and West African countries, while currently more than half of all recorded cases are in South and North America.

    Symptoms

The main symptoms of monkeypox include:
    • fever,
    • headache,
    • myalgia (muscle pain),
    • back ache,
    • enlarged lymph nodes,
    • chills,
    • sore throat,
    • nasal congestion
    • cough,
    • rash in the form of blisters.
Sometimes people first get a rash, and then other symptoms. Some may only have a rash. The illness usually lasts from two to four weeks.

A rash of pimples or blisters first appears on the face, inside the mouth, and other parts of the body, such as the arms, legs, chest, genitals, or anus. The rash goes through different stages until it heals completely.

In some people, monkeypox can cause mild symptoms, in others - serious consequences that require treatment in medical facilities. Usually, pregnant women, children and people with weakened immunity and immunodeficiency are in the group of increased risk of severe course of this disease.

    Spread

Monkey pox can be transmitted from person to person. This requires direct physical contact with an infectious rash, scabs or body fluids of a sick person. It is about communication from a close distance, breathing, touching, kissing, sex.

The disease can spread from the moment symptoms appear until the rash is completely healed and a fresh layer of skin is formed.

    Prevention
    • Avoid close skin-to-skin contact with people who have symptoms similar to monkeypox.
    • Avoid contact with objects and materials used by the patient.
    • Wash your hands regularly with soap or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. It is especially worth doing before eating, after visiting the bathroom and before touching your own face.
    • Disinfect and wash commonly touched surfaces in environments where people may have been infected.

    Vaccination

There are currently three monkeypox vaccines in the world, but their production and supplies are very limited. Some countries are already vaccinating at-risk groups in view of the spread of the disease. Previously, vaccination against monkey pox was carried out only in countries endemic for this infection, that is, in African countries.

In Ukraine, there is currently no need for vaccination against monkeypox, given the lack of registered cases and the reduced probability of their introduction. In addition, the World Health Organization currently does not recommend mass vaccination.

    Treatment

Symptomatic treatment (analgesic, antipyretic) is usually used.

If you think you have monkeypox, you should seek medical attention while wearing personal protective equipment (mask, gloves, etc.) to avoid infecting others.

It is necessary to stay in self-isolation until all the ulcers (blisters) are covered with a crust, the scabs fall off, and a new layer of skin forms under them. It is important that we are also talking about those ulcers that are inside the body, for example, in the mouth.
