Corona infection has spread to 52 mink farms

      7 Oct 2020

Corona infection has affected a total of 52 mink farms, while a further 42 are suspected of infection in the herd.

The authorities have already taken a number of steps. For example, monitoring of mink farms has increased, while mink farms can now receive unannounced visits from the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration.
But at a press conference last week, Minister of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries Mogens Jensen (S) announced that up to 100 North Jutland mink herds must be killed.

Here are selected findings in the course of coronavirus on the Danish mink farms in Denmark:
      * On 17 June, the first notification comes from the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration that corona infection has been found on a mink farm in North Jutland.
      * On 20 June, the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration announces that there is corona infection on another mink farm.
      * On 22 June, the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration will launch a comprehensive screening of 120 mink farms. In the time that follows, there are ongoing reports of corona infection on several mink farms.
      * On 15 September, the online media Nordtinget can report that every fifth North Jutland mink farm has had corona infection among mink.
      * On 30 September, the Danish Environmental Protection Agency encourages hunters in North Jutland to hand in slaughtered predators to find out whether corona infection has occurred from here and to mink farms.
      * On 1 October, Minister of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries Mogens Jensen (S) states that corona infection has been found on a total of 41 Danish mink farms. Up to 100 North Jutland crews must be killed.
      * On 6 October, the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration informs that 51 Danish mink farms have been infected, while 42 are under suspicion.
      * On October 7, infection is registered for the first time on a mink farm in Central Jutland in Bording.
      * According to the plan, the killing of up to 100 mink herds corresponding to about one million animals was to begin. But the killing can only begin when an agreement on compensation for the mink breeders is in place.

      Det f?rste tilf?lde af coronasmitte i en minkbes?tning blev konstateret i juni. Nu er 52 bes?tninger ramt.

The infection is rising among the Danish mink farms.

It is not uplifting to follow the development in the infection rate for the Danish mink farms.

From Tuesday to Wednesday, the number of farms with coronavirus has again increased.

This time from 80 found infected farms to 89, reports the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration.

The board also writes that 49 mink farms are under suspicion of corona.

                  19 OCTOBER 2020

Nine new infected mink farms over the weekend

A total of 110 mink farms either have or have now been found infected with coronavirus. This is shown by the latest statement from the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration on Friday.

Since Friday, when there were 101 infected farms, nine new farms have been tested positive for the virus.

This corresponds to every tenth Danish mink farm being found infected, as there are just over 1100 mink farms in Denmark.
Ni minkfarme er siden fredag konstateret smittet med coronavirus.

100,000 mink must be killed per day, the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration informs

The mink killings are going too slowly, it sounds from the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration, which now wants the pace set.

                    Oct 21, 2020, at 15:09

It is the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration's goal that 100,000 mink must be killed every day.
This is stated by Hanne Larsen from the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration at Wednesday's press conference about the corona situation in Denmark.

                    - So far, 40 herds of mink have been killed, and another 40 herds are being killed, says Hanne Larsen.

A total of 128 mink farms are affected by coronavirus, while the authorities have a look at around 250. There are a total of 1137 mink farms in Denmark.
Minkaflivningerne g?r for langsomt, lyder det fra F?devarestyrelsen, der nu vil have tempoet sat op.

Every eighth Danish mink farm is now infected with covid-19.
This is shown by the latest statement from the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration. Here it appears that a total of 149 Danish mink farms have tested positive for corona infection.

Mystery about spreading infection perhaps solved: Seagulls may be to blame for corona on mink farms

Corona infection has been found on a gull in North Jutland. Several seagulls are now to be investigated whether they are to blame for the spread of infection to mink farms in the municipalities of Vejle and Esbjerg, among others.

Researchers at the University of Copenhagen have now examined four gulls, and on one of them coronavirus has been found on the foot, and therefore it must now be investigated whether gulls are one of the reasons why the infection has spread, writes DR P4 Midt & Vest
                          .

Note: so far no birds were found infected with SarsCoV2. Seagulls spreading corona seems unlikely. A sample from the foot of a seagull tested positive, coincidence? GvdH.

Authorities brooded on knowledge about corona mutations in mink

Already a month before the minister changed the mink strategy, the authorities were aware of serious health risks.

                              Oct 27, 2020

Knowledge about the health danger of two virus mutations that had occurred in mink came to the attention of Minister of Food, Fisheries and Gender Equality Mogens Jensen (S) on 1 October. This happened after the authorities had not since the end of June slaughtered an entire population of mink due to infection.

But already on 4 September, the Statens Serum Institut (SSI) had made the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration aware that two special mink variants of the coronavirus were flourishing.

Too slow reaction from the authorities

Professor of clinical microbiology at the University of Southern Denmark Hans J?rn Kolmos believes that the authorities have reacted too slowly to their knowledge.
                              - It is as if one has not really understood that infectious diseases are spreading at a pace that they themselves decide. The infection does not lie dormant while we discuss what to do about it, he says.

On 16 September, SSI and the University of Copenhagen wrote a new risk assessment to the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration, in which they mentioned that the newest of the two mink variants had now been found among humans and mink on six mink farms.

And two days later, on September 18, SSI and KU wrote a so-called epidemiological report, in which they cut the problem out of cardboard:
                              - The continued development of virus in mink with more and more mutations in the spike protein (certain protein in the virus, ed.) And spread by transmission to humans in Denmark poses a potential danger to public health and to the expected effects of a vaccine.

Minister of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries Mogens Jensen did not want to be interviewed

Allerede en m?ned f?r ministeren ?ndrede minkstrategi, var myndighederne bekendt med alvorlige sundhedsrisici.

Close to every sixth Danish mink farm now infected with coronavirus

                                OCTOBER 29, 2020

A total of 175 mink herds are now infected with coronavirus. This corresponds to just about every sixth crew in Denmark.

The Danish Veterinary and Food Administration's new figures show that there are now 175 mink farms infected with coronavirus.
Thus, the number has increased by nine since Wednesday, when there were 166 infected farms.
In addition, there are five more farms that are suspected of being infected, and thus the number is up to 25 in total.
