    A new virus reaches Spain through the Canary Islands
    In light of the new cases of Oropouche detected, preventive measures and monitoring are reinforced in several autonomous communities

    The Ministry of Health has notified the General Directorate of Public Health of the Canary Islands Health Service (SCS) of three other imported cases of the Oropouche virus in the Canary Islands. These cases are added to the one already reported in early August 2024 in the region. The three recent cases affect adults who began to show symptoms after returning from Cuba.

    In addition, in recent weeks, the Center for the Coordination of Health Alerts and Emergencies (CCAES) has reported similar cases in several autonomous communities (CC. AA.), including Galicia, Andalusia, the Basque Country and Madrid.

    Oropouche virus

    The Oropouche virus is a disease transmitted to humans primarily by the bite of insect vectors, such as mosquitoes, especially the Culicoides paraensis mosquito. The Oropouche virus is endemic in tropical regions of Latin America, especially in Brazil, Peru, Panama, and Trinidad and Tobago, where 8,078 cases have been reported in recent years...​
