Health officials are warning about an uptick of whooping cough cases, a disease making a comeback as vaccination rates lag.

There's been a recent spike in cases in St. Thomas, Woodstock and Elgin County, say officials with Southwestern Public Health. Pertussis, known commonly as whooping cough, used to be one of the most common childhood illnesses and a major cause of child death before a vaccine became available...

The number of whooping cough cases continues to rise in the National Capital Region. Public health authorities are reiterating the importance of vaccination to avoid complications.

In Outaouais, the Integrated Health and Social Services Centre (CISSS) has reported approximately 175 laboratory-confirmed cases since the beginning of June 2024.

The majority of these cases are in the 10 to 19 age group, according to the CISSS from Outaouais, which, at the beginning of July, had counted around fifty cases in the region .

For its part, Ottawa Public Health (OPH) is also reporting an upward trend. No fewer than 32 cases have been recorded in the territory since the beginning of the year, including 23 since the beginning of June.

In the Eastern Ontario Health Unit (EOHU) region, there have been 57 confirmed or suspected cases of whooping cough since the beginning of the year, including 55 reported since the beginning of June.

We therefore only recorded two cases of whooping cough in our territory during the period from January to May 2024 , specifies the BSEO by email.

Province-wide, Ontario has seen an increase in the number of whooping cough cases with more than 500 cases reported between January and July 24, 2024.

Whooping cough is a highly contagious infection, but adults and older children recover well from it, public health officials say.

Virologist and researcher at Montfort Hospital, Hugues Loemba explains that he cannot name the exact cause of the resurgence of cases in the region but that the interruption of vaccination of many children and adolescents due to the pandemic must have played a role .

He also reminds us of the importance for pregnant women to be vaccinated against whooping cough, ideally between the 26th and 32nd week of pregnancy, in order to immunize their child.

Dr Loemba says unvaccinated babies under one year old who contract the disease are at much higher risk of serious complications.

Le nombre de cas de coqueluche continue d’augmenter dans la région de la capitale nationale. Les autorités de santé publique recommandent de se faire vacciner.
