Associated Press - September 15, 2008 11:15 AM ET
HASTINGS, Neb. (AP) - A health department in south-central Nebraska is confirming three cases of whooping cough, a highly contagious respiratory bacterial infection.
The South Heartland District Health Department says six additional cases have been linked to the three confirmed cases.
Symptoms include a prolonged cough that ends in a whooping sound when the person breathes in.
Whooping cough, or pertussis (per-TUH-sis), is highly contagious and is spread when infected people cough or sneeze. It can lead to pneumonia and, in rare cases, death.
