Chikungunya epidemic in Réunion: an imported case reported in Martinique

A chikungunya epidemic is raging on the island of Réunion, where 6,000 cases were recorded last week. This viral disease is transmitted to humans through mosquito bites.

A case of chikungunya imported from Reunion Island was observed in Martinique in March, the Regional Health Agency (ARS) of the Antilles island announced on Friday, April 4.

"The patient, originally from Réunion, stayed in Martinique during the second half of March and presented symptoms suggestive of the disease," the health authority stated in a press release.

A chikungunya epidemic is raging on the island of Réunion, where 6,000 cases were recorded last week.

The University Hospital of the Indian Ocean island also activated the white plan this Friday , which allows certain operations to be cancelled or staff on leave to be recalled to hospitals to cope with the influx of patients.

    "Preventive measures"

The Regional Health Agency (ARS), Public Health France, the territorial community of Martinique and the municipality concerned have deployed "preventive measures necessary to limit the spread of the virus".

These actions include searching for and destroying mosquito breeding sites, treating adult mosquitoes if necessary, and raising awareness among residents of the affected neighborhood.

"Chikungunya is a viral disease transmitted primarily by the bite of the female Aedes mosquito, particularly Aedes aegypti in Martinique," warns the ARS.

This mosquito is also a vector for dengue fever and Zika. In Martinique, the number of dengue cases saw a sudden rebound at the end of March. 160 new clinical cases were recorded between March 24 and 30, compared to 45 the previous week. However, these are "sporadic cases," Public Health France said in its latest bulletin.

Chikungunya: a new imported case confirmed in Martinique

    Article
    May 12, 2025

The Martinique Regional Health Agency (ARS) has confirmed a new imported case of chikungunya in the country, originating from Réunion Island. This is the second imported case of this disease detected since April 2. The two cases are not directly related.

    Preventive measures immediately deployed

As soon as the case was identified, the ARS Martinique, in collaboration with Public Health France and the Territorial Collectivity of Martinique, deployed the necessary preventive measures to limit the spread of the virus in the territory. As of Tuesday, May 6, vector control actions have been carried out and will continue around the places frequented by the patient. These actions include the search for and destruction of mosquito breeding sites, treatments against adult mosquitoes if necessary, as well as awareness-raising among residents of the affected municipalities: Trois-Ilets, Fort-de-France, François, and Rivière-Salée.

    Recommendations to the population

This situation is an opportunity to recall the need for preventive measures to protect ourselves and limit the proliferation of mosquitoes that carry arboviruses (dengue, chikungunya). To do this:
    1. Eliminate breeding sites: Empty containers of stagnant water and regularly clean the areas around homes.
    2. Protect yourself from mosquito bites: Use repellents, wear covering clothing and avoid areas where mosquitoes are present.
    3. Consult your doctor: If you experience symptoms suggestive of chikungunya (fever, joint and muscle pain), consult your doctor or call 15.
    About Chikungunya

Chikungunya is a viral disease transmitted primarily by the bite of the female Aedes mosquito, particularly Aedes aegypti in Martinique. This mosquito, which also carries dengue and Zika, bites primarily during the day but can bite at any time. The disease can go unnoticed or manifests itself on average 4 to 7 days after the infective bite, with the sudden onset of a high fever (over 38.5°C) associated with headaches and significant muscle and joint pain affecting the extremities.

L'ARS Martinique confirme un nouveau cas importé de chikungunya sur le territoire, en provenance de La Réunion. Il s’agit du second cas d’importation de cette maladie détectée depuis le 2 avril dernier. Les deux cas sont sans lien direct.
