A chikungunya epidemic is raging on the island of Réunion, where 6,000 cases were recorded last week. This viral disease is transmitted to humans through mosquito bites.
A case of chikungunya imported from Reunion Island was observed in Martinique in March, the Regional Health Agency (ARS) of the Antilles island announced on Friday, April 4.
"The patient, originally from Réunion, stayed in Martinique during the second half of March and presented symptoms suggestive of the disease," the health authority stated in a press release.

The University Hospital of the Indian Ocean island also activated the white plan this Friday , which allows certain operations to be cancelled or staff on leave to be recalled to hospitals to cope with the influx of patients.
"Preventive measures"
The Regional Health Agency (ARS), Public Health France, the territorial community of Martinique and the municipality concerned have deployed "preventive measures necessary to limit the spread of the virus".
These actions include searching for and destroying mosquito breeding sites, treating adult mosquitoes if necessary, and raising awareness among residents of the affected neighborhood.
"Chikungunya is a viral disease transmitted primarily by the bite of the female Aedes mosquito, particularly Aedes aegypti in Martinique," warns the ARS.
This mosquito is also a vector for dengue fever and Zika. In Martinique, the number of dengue cases saw a sudden rebound at the end of March. 160 new clinical cases were recorded between March 24 and 30, compared to 45 the previous week. However, these are "sporadic cases," Public Health France said in its latest bulletin.
