China's ministry of health recorded 263 public health incidents involving 8,594 people and 37 deaths in October.
With the incidence of respiratory diseases rising in the approach to winter, the ministry ordered local health authorities to intensify monitoring and reporting of cases of H5N1 avian influenza, flu, SARS and pneumonia with causes unknown, so as to quickly identify the outbreak and spread of epidemic diseases and take effective countermeasures.
Local health authorities should strengthen hygiene monitoring of school dining facilities to reduce and avoid food poisoning incidents, the MOH said.
Public health emergencies include the sudden outbreak and spread of contagious diseases, an outbreak of a disease with no known cause, mass food poisoning or industrial poisoning.
