Bandar Seri Begawan - The Minister of Health has expressed his concern that many people, including Bruneians, are refusing to take the Influenza. A (H1N1)vaccine injection on account of the pandemic being categorised as "mild".

This was related at the 126th Session of the Executive Board of the World Health Organisation (WHO) at Geneva, Switzerland recently.

Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Hj Suyoi Hj Osman said,

"This also applies to Brunei, although the vaccine has been provided free of charge to all of Brunei's population."

In a press statement, it stated that one of the main agenda of the meetings were to discuss the WHO annual programme and to prepare for agenda and a draft of the resolution which will be addressed at the WHO General Assembly in May this year.

During the meetings, 18 technical issues were discussed, including the "Pandemic Influenza Preparedness: Sharing of Influenza viruses and access to vaccines and other benefits". Also in discussion were the world's achievements towards the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

The Bruneian delegation, comprising the minister and several senior officials from the ministry, also suggested a six-year period of a
"Prevention and control of communicable diseases: Implementation of the global strategy" to deal with issues of non-infectious diseases such as diabetes, coronary heart diseases and cancer, amongst others.

Meanwhile, Pehin Dato Hj Suyoi held bilateral talks with his Indonesian colleague from Indonesia's Ministry of Health, Dr E R Sedyaningsih, on January 18 whereby they expressed their delight in the close relationship and cooperation shared by both countries in the area of health.

Both parties added that they would further increase efforts to strengthen the cooperation.

According to the statement, Pehin Dato Hj Suyoi and his delegation will be holding a gathering for medical students, doctors and nurses who are undertaking their studies at the United Kingdom on January 24. The purpose is to promote the nation's health policy, amongst others. The gathering will also be opened for discussion to address any problems faced by medical students, doctors and nurses in their respective fields during their course of studies.

The statement said that some of the problems often mooted were placements, whereby medical students had to undergo a "housemanship training" course after their medical studies and obtain a place in courses of medical specialisations.

Since May 2009, Brunei has been a member of the WHO Executive Board and will be for a period of three years. Pehin Dato Hj Suyoi himself is an executive board member of the body. -- Courtesy of The Brunei Times
