News Highlights
1. From 6 September 2016, the Ministry of Health (MOH) will no longer require suspect Zika cases to be isolated while waiting for test results. As the cases of Zika in Singapore have been mild so far, confirmed cases will no longer need to be hospitalised unless medically indicated. From 7 September, MOH will extend subsidies for the Zika test to all Singaporeans with Zika symptoms.

Singapore says unclear if local Zika strain causes birth defects
By Fathin Ungku and Marius Zaharia | SINGAPORE
...
Scientists say the Zika strain in Brazil most likely evolved from an Asian strain. The virus, first detected in Uganda in 1947, spread to equatorial Asia in the 1960s and 1980s.
Singapore said the strain causing the current outbreak also evolved from an Asian strain. Raymond Lin, head of the National Public Health Laboratory said the strain in Singapore and Brazil were slightly different, but it was not clear what this meant.
"There might be fine differences, there might be more mutations but currently there is no evidence at all to suggest that it's less severe or more severe; whether there is less or more likelihood of getting microcephaly," he told media.

Joint MOH-NEA statement (8 September) 1. As of 12pm, 8 September, MOH has confirmed nine new cases of locally transmitted Zika virus infection in Singapore. Of these,
Four cases are linked to the Aljunied Crescent/ Sims Drive/ Kallang Way/ Paya Lebar Way cluster;

One case is linked to the Elite Terrace cluster.
2. There is a potential new cluster involving two previously reported cases and a new case today. One of the previously unlinked cases in the cluster was reported on 7 September and his work address was verified today. They all work in the Ubi Crescent area. The other two cases have no known links to any existing cluster.

Sequencing of Zika Virus Strains From Sims Drive/ Aljunied Crescent Cluster

News Highlights
The Ministry of Healths National Public Health Laboratory (NPHL) and A*STARs Bioinformatics Institute (BII) have completed the sequencing of the virus strains of three live Zika cases found in Singapore. These cases comprise the first imported Zika infection detected in May 2016, and two local transmission cases from the Sims Drive/Aljunied Crescent cluster. Key Findings
2. The sequence of the first imported Zika case that was reported in May 2016, is similar to the strains currently found in South America. This finding is consistent with the patients travel history. He had travelled to Brazil just before he fell ill.
3. The Zika virus strains found in the two locally-transmitted cases from the Sims Drive-Aljunied Crescent cluster were not recently imported from South America. These virus strains have sequences similar to strains of Zika virus which have been circulating in South-east Asia since the 1960s before the viruses spread to French Polynesia in 2013 and subsequently to Brazil in 2015. Implications of Sequencing Findings
4. The analysis of the virus found in two locally transmitted cases shows it belongs to the Asian lineage and likely evolved from a strain that was already circulating in South-east Asia. Currently there is no evidence from existing studies and from this sequence to indicate whether the differences between these strains and the South American virus correlate with differences in severity or type of disease. The virus sequence, when shared with the international community and compared with existing virus sequences, will help in tracking the global spread and evolution of the Zika virus.
5. Correlation of virus strains with specific clinical manifestations will take long-term careful epidemiological studies as well as experimental studies in research laboratories. Knowing the range and distribution of virus strains would also be useful in future testing of vaccines and various treatment strategies.
6. MOHs NPHL and A*STARs BII will continue to monitor and study the evolution of the virus in Singapore and the region. The sequences from their analyses will be made available on public databases for the benefit of the global scientific community, including the World Health Organization.

Joint MOH-NEA statement (11 September)
1. As of 12pm, 11 September, MOH has confirmed 11 new cases of locally transmitted Zika virus infection in Singapore. Of these, one case is linked to the Elite Terrace cluster. The other ten cases have no known links to any existing cluster.
2. To date, there are a total of 329 cases of locally transmitted Zika virus infection in Singapore, with seven clusters. Eight pregnant women have been confirmed to have Zika. Their doctors are following up closely with them to provide support and counselling.
3. From Monday 12 September 2016, NEA and MOH will be providing daily updates via NEAs website (www.nea.gov.sg/zika-clusters) in place of daily media statements. Members of the public may refer to the website for updated information on the number of reported Zika cases and ongoing clusters.

Singapore: Zika virus cases reach up to 329, 8 pregnant women affected
The Ministry of Health (MOH) said on Sunday that 11 new cases of locally transmitted Zika virus infection cases have been confirmed bringing the total number of cases up to 329.
MOH said out of these 11 cases, only one case is linked to the Elite Terrace cluster but the other ten cases have no known links to any existing cluster.
The ministry added in its statement that so far eight pregnant women have been infected with the virus and the doctors are closely following up with them to provide support and counselling.
The National Environment Agency (NEA) believes that the vector control operations play the key solution in reducing the spread of the Zika virus.
