SEOUL, July 16 (Yonhap) -- South Korea on Wednesday reported its first African swine fever (ASF) case in about four months.

The latest ASF case was found at a farm located in the inter-Korean border county of Paju in Gyeonggi Province, which raises some 2,500 pigs, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.

South Chungcheong Province has confirmed its first outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF), prompting emergency quarantine measures by authorities.

The provincial government announced on the 25th that a pig farm in Songsan-myeon, Dangjin City, tested positive for ASF after two pigs died on the 17th–18th, followed by four additional deaths on the 23rd–24th. The farm, which raises 463 pigs, submitted samples for testing upon veterinary recommendation.

The Chungnam Animal Hygiene Testing Laboratory examined six pigs, including one deceased and 14 from the same pen, confirming all six as ASF-positive at 8 a.m. on the 25th. The deceased pigs were identified as 24-week-old pigs introduced on the 4th from a breeding farm in Hapcheon, Gyeongsangnam Province.

Following the province’s first ASF case, authorities alerted local governments, the Korea Pork Association, and pig farms. An initial response team was deployed to restrict access to the affected farm and impose movement controls on livestock. Four checkpoints within 3 km of the farm are enforcing entry restrictions.

Disinfection is underway at 28 pig farms within a 10 km radius. The province and Dangjin City plan to cull 960 pigs from the affected farm and two others owned by the same farmer...

SEOUL – South Korea on Jan 17 confirmed its first case of African swine fever (ASF) in about two months, prompting the authorities to cull thousands of pigs and issue a standstill order to prevent the virus from spreading.

The outbreak was detected at a farm in Gangneung, about 170km east of Seoul in Gangwon Province, according to the provincial government.

The authorities said 29 of 32 pigs that died at the facility on Jan 16 tested positive for the virus, which is fatal to pigs but harmless to humans.

It is the first confirmed case in the country since November, when an outbreak was reported in Dangjin, South Chungcheong Province...

* Farm occurrences in 2025 (6 cases ): 5 cases in northern Gyeonggi Province ( 3 in Yangju , 1 in Paju , 1 in Yeoncheon ), 1 case in Dangjin, South Chungcheong Province

< Quarantine measures >
First , as soon as African swine fever was confirmed on Saturday , January 17 , the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters dispatched an initial response team and an epidemiological investigation team to the site to control the entry of outsiders and vehicles into the farm , and culled 20,150 pigs * from the outbreak farm to prevent further spread , and implemented emergency quarantine measures such as disinfection and epidemiological investigation .

In addition , a central mobile quarantine organization consisting of three people , one from the Ministry of Agriculture , Food and Rural Affairs and two from the Quarantine Headquarters, has been dispatched to the outbreak city or county to comprehensively manage the on-site situation, including culling, burial, and disposal of residue .
* Available resources : 41 quarantine vehicles from the Joint Disinfection Team , 14 quarantine vehicles owned by local governments , and 8 vehicles leased by the National Agricultural Cooperative Federation.

Fourth , urgent detailed inspections are being conducted on farm No. 14 within a 10km quarantine zone around the outbreak farm and pig farm No. 148 with an epidemiological relationship with the outbreak farm , clinical examinations are being conducted on farm No. 919 with an epidemiological relationship with the outbreak farm , and cleaning and disinfection are being conducted on 15 vehicles .

3. Additional measures to strengthen quarantine management against ASF

We will inspect the on-site implementation status of the ASF quarantine management reinforcement measures announced and implemented in the revised version and strengthen their effectiveness , and strengthen the following additional quarantine measures for people , vehicles , livestock , and goods to prevent further outbreaks of ASF .

First , for pig farm workers, in preparation for the Chuseok holiday, when there is a lot of human interaction, gatherings ( events ) and the import and storage of illegal livestock products will be prohibited , and quarantine education and publicity by nationality will continue to be promoted by understanding the status of farm workers .

Second , in order to block the illegal distribution and trading of illegal livestock products ( beef , pork, etc. ) through domestic and international delivery services , we will cooperate with relevant organizations and also conduct monitoring and inspections of illegal livestock products traded online , etc.

Third , environmental inspections will be conducted on imported supplies ( purchased online ) used inside livestock houses, such as automatic waterers and feeders, and on items stored by importers of foreign equipment. Fourth , for slaughterhouses with a high risk of cross-contamination due to the high number of livestock , people , and vehicles entering and leaving, environmental inspections will be strengthened . Lastly, in order to protect a large number of good farmers, there are many cases where basic quarantine rules are not followed at outbreak farms. Therefore, if violations of quarantine rules are confirmed, we plan to take strict measures such as reducing the compensation for culling .

4. Requests

This outbreak farm is located 800m from the 58th outbreak farm in Pocheon, Gyeonggi Province , which occurred on January 24, 2026 , and was confirmed during a preliminary inspection of pig farms within the quarantine area (10km) currently under movement restrictions .

To prevent the spread of ASF, the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters has dispatched an initial quarantine team and an epidemiological investigation team to the farm in question to control the entry of outsiders, livestock , and vehicles into the farm . In addition to conducting an epidemiological investigation , the pigs being raised at the farm in question will be culled in accordance with the African Swine Fever Emergency Operation Guidelines (SOP) .

Considering that this outbreak is an additional outbreak within the previously observed area of the outbreak farm , a temporary movement ban will not be issued , and the existing quarantine area will remain in place . 1. Situation

The farm where the outbreak occurred in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province, this time is owned by the representative of the farm where the outbreak occurred in Anseong, Gyeonggi Province (January 23 ) . The farm owner reported the death of pigs, and as a result of a detailed inspection , African swine fever was finally confirmed positive on February 8 ( Sunday ) . This is the ninth case nationwide this year .

2. Quarantine measures for farms where the outbreak occurred

As African swine fever was confirmed at a pig farm in Hwaseong-si, Gyeonggi-do, the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters immediately dispatched an initial quarantine team and an epidemiological investigation team to the site to control entry of outsiders and vehicles into the farm (from February 8th) . To prevent further spread , 1,194 pigs at the outbreak farm were culled , and emergency quarantine measures such as disinfection and epidemiological investigations are being implemented .

Second , a temporary standstill order was issued for workers and vehicles at livestock facilities such as pig farms, slaughterhouses, and feed factories in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province and five adjacent cities and counties ( Ansan , Suwon , Yongin , Osan , and Pyeongtaek , Gyeonggi Province ) from 1:30 AM on Sunday , February 8 , 2026 to 1:30 AM on Monday , February 9 , 2026 , and compliance with the order is being checked .

Third , in order to block the spread of the virus within the outbreak area, we are mobilizing all 42 available disinfection resources , including wide-area disinfection equipment and disinfection vehicles, to intensively disinfect pig farms (No. 248) and surrounding roads in Hwaseong , Gyeonggi Province , and five adjacent cities and counties where the outbreak occurred . In addition, since February 8 , a central mobile quarantine organization consisting of three people , one from the Ministry of Agriculture , Food and Rural Affairs and two from the Quarantine Headquarters, has been dispatched to the outbreak city or county to comprehensively manage the on-site situation , including culling , burial , and disposal of remains .
* Available resources : 10 quarantine vehicles from the Joint Disinfection Team , 27 quarantine vehicles owned by local governments , and 5 vehicles leased by the National Agricultural Cooperative Federation.

Fourth , urgent detailed inspections are being conducted on 24 farms within a 10km quarantine zone around the outbreak farm and 58 pig farms with epidemiological connections to the outbreak farm , and cleaning and disinfection are also being carried out on 11 vehicles related to the epidemiological situation .

3. Quarantine measures for Lunar New Year

The Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasure Headquarters will focus on implementing quarantine measures in preparation for the Lunar New Year holiday to minimize the risk of viruses entering farms due to increased movement of people and vehicles before and after the holiday .

First , the days before and after the Lunar New Year holidays (February 13-14, February 19-20) will be designated as ‘ National Intensive Disinfection Days ’ , and comprehensive disinfection will be carried out on livestock-related facilities and vehicles such as pig farms , slaughterhouses , and feed factories .

Second , we will strengthen the early detection system for suspected livestock by strengthening the comprehensive inspection of environmental samples such as worker supplies and compost at pig farms nationwide and by strengthening telephone surveillance .

This outbreak farm is epidemiologically related to the vehicle that visited the 59th outbreak farm in Yeonggwang, Jeollanam- do on January 26, 2026.
