    Influenza
    The 2016 influenza season started in week 19 (week starting 9 May) when the Viral Watch detection rate rose to 19% and continued to rise/remain above 10%.
    ILI programme: In 2016 to date, specimens from 542 patients were received from 2 ILI sites. Influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 was detected in four specimens, influenza A(H3N2) in three, and influenza B in 33 patients.
    Viral Watch programme: During the same period, specimens from 262 patients were received from Viral Watch sites. Influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 was detected in two patients, influenza A(H3N2) in one, and influenza B in 48 patients.
    Pneumonia surveillance: In this time period, specimens from 1508 patients with severe respiratory illness (SRI) were received from the 6 sentinel sites. Influenza A(H3N2) was detected in the specimen of one, and influenza B in 31 patients.
    Respiratory syncytial virus
    The 2016 RSV season which started in week 8 (week ending 28 February) continues, with a detection rate of 53% in pneumonia patients in week 18.
    In 2016 to date RSV has been detected in the specimens of 54 patients in the ILI programme, 19 from the Viral Watch and 375 from patients in the pneumonia surveillance programme.

    To date in 2016, 10 patients have been tested for influenza at the time of entry into South Africa following travel abroad and 3 have tested influenza positive.
    Patients known to have acquired influenza abroad are not included in the table or epidemiological curve.

    Influenza
    The 2016 influenza season which started in week 19 (week starting 9 May) when the Viral Watch detection rate
    rose to 19% continues.
    ILI programme: In 2016 to date, specimens from 985 patients were received from 2 ILI sites. Influenza A not
    subtyped was detected in one specimen, influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 in 14, influenza A(H3N2) in 38, and influenza B
    in 96 patients.
    Viral Watch programme: During the same period, specimens from 711 patients were received from Viral Watch
    sites. Influenza A not subtyped was detected in one patient, influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 in 24, influenza A(H3N2) in
    92, and influenza B in 176 patients.
    Pneumonia surveillance: In this time period, specimens from 2231 patients with severe respiratory illness (SRI)
    were received from the 6 sentinel sites. Influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 was detected in the specimens of five, influenza
    A(H3N2) in 26 and influenza B in 92 patients.
