Making the disclosure last Wednesday at the opening of a 3-day workshop for the country's Avian Influenza Task Forces, the vice president of Liberia ambassador Joseph N Boakai said that the latest information on the spread of the bird flu is that it has been discovered in the Ivory Coast which he said is very closed to Liberia.
According to Boakai the Avian Influenza Virus (H5N1) is a bird virus with the potential to become an easily transmitted human virus which could cause a global human Influenza pandemic.

Quoting the World Health Organization (WHO), the vice president revealed that the disease has now spread to 48 countries world wide and has been the fastest and most extensive geographical spread of any Avian Influenza virus since the disease's first alarm in 1878. (???-MHSC)

"So far, the spread of H5N1 virus from person to person has been limited and has not continued beyond one person" he said.

Boakai stated that Liberia is just recovering from years of civil crisis and retrogression and as such cannot afford another human tragedy, stressing "it is therefore critical that all of us help to control the spread of the disease in Liberia.

The WHO representative to Liberia, Dr Daniel Fussum also expressed concern about the spread of the disease.

He said WHO was deeply concern about the widespread of the Bird Flu sick and would sponsor any program associated with the prevention of the disease.

Dr Fussum added his voice to the voice of the vice president of Liberia, calling on all Liberians to help fight the spread of the disease.

He urged the participants at the workshop to spread the awareness on the prevention of the disease to their respective county.

Also speaking at the workshop, the chairman of the National Task Forces on the control and prevention of the deadly Bird Flu disease, Dr Chris Toe, said that the government is committed to cater to the welfare of its citizens for which it decided to host the workshop for the county to publish the necessary information surrounding the disease to the people in the 15 counties.

"We are in this breathing space before it happens. We do not know how long that breathing space is going to be. But, if we are not all organizing ourselves to get ready and to take action to prepare for a pandemic, then we are squandering an opportunity for our human security"- Dr. David Nabarro
