  • EAC regional Avian Influenza Response project winds up

East African Community Secretariat Arusha, Tanzania, 14 November 2011: A three-year European Union (EU) supported EAC Avian Influenza Response Project is winding up at the end of November 2011. The Avian influenza Response project aimed at contributing to the socio- economic welfare and public health in the East African Community by minimizing the impact of Avian Influenza (AI).

The project, which was launched in December 2008 was specifically designed to harmonize, synergize and coordinate National Action Plans for Avian Influenza and other Trans-boundary Animal Diseases (TADs); and to enhance sustainable capacity of the EAC Secretariat and National Veterinary Services.

The EAC Avian Influenza Response project was implemented by EAC Secretariat and Food and Agriculture Organization-Emergency Centre for Trans-boundary Animal Diseases (FAO-ECTAD).

Addressing participants attending the project winding up workshop on 10 November at the Naura Springs Hotel in Arusha, Tanzania, the Deputy Secretary General of the East African Community in charge of Productive and Social Sectors, Mr. Jean Claude Nsengiyumva hailed the European Union for the support not only in the area of disease control but also in other sectors of the EAC integration and development process.
