    Womey drama: here's the complete list of victims according to the Government (official statement)

    Post by Guineematin the 19-7 - 2014

    Conakry, 18 September 2014 - On the day of Tuesday, September 16, 2014, a delegation of administrative authorities of N'Z?r?kor? administrative region and the sub-prefecture of womey, visited the latter locality.

    At womey, the mission had been working to raise local awareness about the fight against the epidemic of Ebola virus. This was followed by a hostile reaction from local residents followed by throwing stones which forced members of the delegation to flee.

    While some were able to join N'Z?r?kor?, including the Governor and the Prefect of N'Z?r?kor?, nine (9) members of the delegation took refuge around Womey to escape physical violence.

    A search mission, consisting of administrative and security authorities accompanying the Prosecutor of the Republic and the coroner was dispatched to the scene to find the following persons:

    - Moriba Tour?, sub-Prefect of Womey;
    - Fode Mamoudou Tour?, son of the sub-Prefect;
    - Dr. Ibrahima Fernandez, Director of Health Prefectural of N'Z?r?kor?;
    - Dr. Ibrahima Saliou Barry , Assistant Director General of the Regional Hospital N'Z?r?kor?;
    - P?p? Kpogohomou, Head of Health Center of Womey;
    - Mo?se Mamy , Pastor Evangelist of N'Zao;
    - Molou Ch?rif, Technician at the rural radio of N'Z?r?kor?;
    - Sidiki Sidib?, Technician intern at the rural radio of N'Z?r?kor?;
    - Fac?ly Camara, journalist at a private radio.

    The investigations of the search mission has discovered eight (8) body in the village. The son of the sub-prefect, meanwhile, was found alive, hidden in the vicinity.

    The Government condemns in the strongest power, the killing of Guinean citizens, including representatives of the State in the exercise of their functions.

    These crimes are all the more regrettable that they come at a time when the international community is mobilizing to assist affected countries in their fight against the Ebola virus.

    The Government ensures that these acts will not go unpunished and will receive the appropriate judicial response. Already a judicial investigation was opened.

    Everyone involved in these murders will be hunted down and brought before the courts to be sanctioned under the Act. To date six (6) people have already been arrested. Security forces are deployed to support the ongoing investigation.

    The Government extends its heartfelt condolences to the families of victims.

    He calls the brave Guinean people to remain united against the trial posed by Ebola epidemic. This fight should be an opportunity for Guineans to set aside their differences and stand united in this national effort.

        The common denominator in eruptions of violence seems to be spraying disinfectant, which is reported to be bleach when it is identified. The informative article Pathfinder found in post #4 reports on this link in the violence in Nz?r?kor? Prefecture, and I think there was one incident in Liberia like this. It's unclear to me if bleach was sprayed at Womey, or if the the violence was anticipatory.

        I've wondered if spraying down public markets with bleach to control ebola has any real science behind it.

        Arrests Made in Killings of Guinea Ebola Education Team

        Associated Press
        Sept. 19, 2014 12:40 p.m. ET

        CONAKRY, Guinea?Guinea's government said six people have been arrested in connection with the killings of eight people on an Ebola awareness campaign.

        A team of health and government officials, accompanied by journalists, had gone to the village of Womey, in Guinea, on Tuesday. Although there have been attacks on health centers in several affected countries, these are the first fatalities.

        "The government strongly condemns the killings of these Guinean citizens including those officials who were carrying out their duties at the time," the statement issued by the presidency of Guinea said Friday. "These crimes are especially regrettable coming at a time when the international community is mobilizing to help the affected countries in their fight against the Ebola virus."...

          WHO Continues Ebola Fight Despite Murders

          CONAKRY, GUINEA / GENEVA?

          The World Health Organization says it will not be deterred in efforts to combat Ebola in Guinea and other West African countries by the killing of a team of educators trying to raise awareness of the disease in a village in Guinea.

          ?We need to continue to combat against Ebola. We need to investigate about these murders, but they should not stop us. We should continue the dialogue with the community. We should continue to explain our work," WHO Technical Officer and Ebola specialist, Pierre Formenty, told VOA.

          "We should continue to show our empathy with the victim, with the families, with the community. Without that again, we will not be able to make our messages understood by the population and we will not be able to control it," he added.

          Earlier Friday, the Guinean government said it was stopping Ebola education activities in the country?s southeast after eight missing health workers and journalists were murdered there this week. Their bodies were found in a septic tank in a primary school in a nearby village on Thursday, reportedly killed by villagers fearful of the disease and suspicious of official efforts to combat it. Two other workers remain missing.
          ...
          Outreach activities have become ?impossible? in the southeast, said Dr. Fanta Kabba, permanent secretary at the Ministry of Health. She said efforts there will now focus just on treating the sick.

          ?We are waiting for more details? and trying to figure out why locals resist, she said. ?? Putting in place the strategies to fight Ebola has become impossible. We cannot act when we are being prevented from acting.?
          ...
          This is third major attack on health workers in southeastern Guinea since the regional outbreak began there early this year.

            Still trying to understand the reason for the late August market spraying that appears to have kicked off so much violence -

            http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worl...ment-says.html

            By AFP

            5:53PM BST 30 Aug 2014
            ...
            A curfew was imposed in N'Zerekore, Guinea's second-largest city, after two days of protests Thursday and Friday by market stall holders against a team of health workers sent, without notice, to spray their market with disinfectant.
            No real rationale for a one-time disinfectant spraying here:

            http://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-28984259

            ...
            He said that a market was sprayed following a funeral - although the death was not the result of Ebola.

            The organization reported to be responsible for the market spraying is the Red Cross according to this report:
            http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/t...ers-in-guinea/
            By Abby Phillip September 19
            ...
            Last month, in a market in Nzerekore, about 30 miles from Wome, residents panicked when Red Cross workers began spraying disinfectant after a funeral.
            The group that was later attacked in Womey is reported to be a completely different group:

            The Guinean pastor had already been traveling from remote village to remote village three times a week to spread awareness about preventing and containing the deadly virus. But as the outbreak flared up again, Mamy and a team of workers from the non-governmental organization Eau de la Vie (Water of Life) began going to the villages five times a week.
            They don't seem to have been spraying anything - just distributing supplies and educating:

            "Many places accepted their teaching," Jon Erickson, a friend of Mamy's who works with the Christian aid organization CAMA Services, wrote in an online posting. "But some villagers had heard a rumor that the [bleach they were distributing], which kills the Ebola virus, was actually the virus itself."
            Of note is that this most tragic violence occurred the first time local officials were involved in this group's outreach effort:

            This time, they enlisted local officials to help ease the tensions and fear that run rampant in that part of the country, which is near where the deadly outbreak began.

              New Ebola Outbreak in Lola, Prefecture of N'Z?r?kor? (in French)

              Approximate translation below

              2 confirmed, 9 suspected.

              This town is situated near the borders of Liberia and C?te d'Ivoire. Patient zero for this location returned to Liberia where he died.

              The local coordinator reports that there's a slight increase in Ebola cases in the Prefecture. New cases have been recorded in the Macenta Prefecture in the village of Bofossou.

              The coordinator also called attention to the village of Koyama in the Macenta Prefecture near the Liberia border where medical teams are not yet operational, which restricts the ability to establish the epidemiological situation in this area. He recalls that it was a Koyama mission to raise awareness that was taken hostage a few weeks ago, and in which he had been taken.
