Botswana / Covid-19: Containment increases cases of rape of children - UNICEF

The United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef) on Wednesday expressed concern over "the alarming number of child victims of rape" since the start of the confinement period in Botswana started on April 2 as part of measures to containing the spread of the coronavirus. "It is heartbreaking to hear that out of 22 reported cases of rape, seven are children between the ages of 2 and 13," said UNICEF country representative Sarah Ng'nja. .

She said her organization strongly condemned any form of abuse and exploitation of children during this period of confinement.

“In just a few weeks, the Covid-19 has changed the lives of children and families across the country. Some parents are fighting to take care of their children and the protection risks for children are increasing, "said Ng’nja.

According to Botswana deputy police chief Dinah Marathe, investigations have revealed that the spiral of rape and assault during the confinement period was committed by perpetrators who are family members of the victims.
