763 Monkeypox Cases, 53 Lassa Fever Deaths Recorded in January

According to the latest epidemiological data from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), the organisation has recorded 763 (501 male, 261 female) confirmed cases of Monkeypox diseases from thirty-four (34) states and Federal Capital Territory (FCT), as of January 1, 2023.
Of the states with the cases of Monkeypox in the country, Lagos leads with 188 cases, followed by Abia (58), Bayelsa (45), Imo (45), Ogun (40), Ondo (40), Rivers (37), and Delta (31).

The number of confirmed cases of monkeypox in the country has increased to 604, according to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control.
This is even as the suspected cases stand at 1,549 from January 1 to October 30, 2022.

Lagos, Ogun top list as NCDC records 30 new cases of monkeypox

A total of 30 new cases of monkeypox have been recorded in Nigeria, according to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).
Monkeypox is a rare viral infection that does not spread easily between people. It is usually a mild self-limiting illness and most people recover within a few weeks. However, severe illness can occur in some individuals.
The NCDC, in its latest monkeypox situation report, said the cases were confirmed in 12 states.
The states include Lagos (13), Ogun (3), Akwa Ibom (2), Anambra (2), Borno (2), Kaduna (2), Rivers (1), Bayelsa (1), Delta (1), Katsina (1), Osun (1), and Taraba (1).

“From 1st January to 11th September 2022, Nigeria has recorded 349 confirmed cases (male 65%) from thirty (30) states,” the report reads.
“Seven (7) associated deaths have been recorded from 7 states in 2022 – Delta (1), Lagos (1), Ondo (1) and Akwa Ibom (1), Kogi (1), Taraba (1) and Imo (1). Case fatality ratio (CFR) of 2.0%.”
According to the report, from January 1 to September 11, Lagos recorded the highest number of monkeypox cases with 76 cases, followed by Rivers with 21, and Bayelsa with 20.
NCDC also added that individuals aged between 31 and 40 have been most affected in 2022.
“Overall, since its re-emergence in September 2017, one thousand, three hundred & ninety two (1,392) suspected cases have been reported from 35 states & the FCT. 41.3% of these suspected cases were positive for the disease,” the report reads...Leave a comment:

NCDC confirms 481 monkeypox cases, 7 deaths

Nigeria has so far recorded 1,180 suspected cases of monkeypox.
The country also recorded 482 cases and seven deaths resulting from monkeypox in 2022.
These were made known in Abuja by the Director-General, of Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Dr Ifedayo Adetifa at a bi-weekly ministerial media conference anchored by the Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire.

Monkeypox spreads to 30 states, cases hit 277

The number of confirmed cases of monkeypox in the country has increased to 277, according to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control.
This is even as the suspected cases stand at 704 from January 1 to August 28, 2022.
The report also showed that six deaths had been recorded so far in six states in the country.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has reported 21 more cases of monkey pox in the country within the past seven days.
The NCDC via its official website announced on Sunday that the disease could be spread by close contact and exposure to an infected person’s respiratory droplets, skin lesions or bodily fluids.
The agency also reported that Nigeria recorded six monkey pox-related deaths between January and August and that six states in the country had recorded one death each from the disease.

Nigeria recorded 48 additional cases of monkeypox between August 8 and August 14 2022, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), has said.
This is as the government of the United Kingdom said it had identified a different strain of monkeypox infection in an individual who recently travelled to West Africa.
The NCDC said the 48 cases were recorded in 16 states.
It stated that Lagos State topped the list of new infections with 15 cases, while Abia and Ogun recorded five cases each.
Benue, Edo, Rivers and the FCT had three cases each; Bayelsa and Ondo had two cases each, while Cross River, Anambra, Gombe, Imo, Katsina, Oyo and Osun recorded one case each.
The latest infections raised the number of cases in Nigeria since the beginning of the year to 220, the NCDC stated, adding that the infections were recorded in 29 states.
It stated also that of the 220 infections, males accounted for 144 cases, while females accounted for the 76 others.
It added that four monkeypox deaths had so far been recorded in four states – Delta, Lagos, Ondo and Akwa Ibom.
Monkeypox has killed a total o0f 12 persons in Nigeria since September 2017, the NCDC stated.

The Ebonyi State Government on Monday confirmed one case of monkeypox in the state and 32 suspected cases.
The state Commissioner for Health, Daniel Umezuruike, disclosed this to reporters in Abakaliki.
According to Mr Umezuruike, since the outset of the disease, Ebonyi had recorded a total of 32 suspected cases with only one confirmed.
“Case fatality rate is still 0 (as there have been no record of any death both in suspected and confirmed cases) in the state.”
He said this followed the notification of a suspected case of monkeypox on 10 August at Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital Abakaliki.
“A 32-year old male, a native of Ugwulangwu, Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi but resides in Abakaliki, said to have travelled to Rivers State returned to Ebonyi on July 7.
“The man is presented with history of fever, masculopapular rash, sore throat, headache and generalised weakness of the body.
“A presumptive diagnosis of Monkeypox was made to rule out Smallpox. Sample was collected and sent to the NCDC National Reference Laboratory and the result came out positive for Monkeypox Virus.
“The patient was admitted into Ebonyi Isolation Centre and is currently being managed for monkeypox and he is responding to treatment,” he stated...Leave a comment:

60 monkeypox cases reported in 19 states-NCDC

Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) confirmed, on Sunday, that no fewer than 60 new suspected cases of monkeypox were reported in epidemiology week 31, 2022, (1st to 7th August, 2022), from 19 states, with four deaths since the beginning of the year.
Breakdown of the figure indicated that Ebonyi state led with eight cases, Abia (5), Adamawa (5), Ondo (5), Taraba (5), FCT (4), Imo (4), Lagos (4), Ogun (4), Edo (3), Anambra (2), Gombe (2), Kwara (2), Rivers (2), Cross River (1), Oyo (1), Kano (1), Nasarawa (1) and Niger (1).
Of the 60 suspected cases, NCDC said that 15 new confirmed cases were recorded in the period under review from 10 states, namely, Imo (3), FCT (2), Ondo (2), Rivers (2), Abia (1), Anambra (1), Ebonyi (1), Edo (1), Ogun (1) and Nasarawa (1).

The Gombe State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Habu Dahiru, alongside the state Epidemiologist, Nuhu Bile, has confirmed the state has joined 26 other states of the federation with incidence of monkeypox.
Briefing journalists at the Public Health Emergency Operations Centre, the commissioner disclosed that out of 19 suspected cases in Gombe, no less than three persons have been confirmed to have monkeypox.
Dahiru, who doubles as the state incident manager revealed that the state opted for testing with Polymerase Chain Reaction, which is the World Health Organisation’s approved method in order to ascertain the actual position of patients.
According to him, no death has been recorded, stressing that recovery was between three to four weeks period.

Edo Confirms 8 Cases of Monkeypox Infection

July 25, (THEWILL) – The Edo State Ministry of Health has confirmed that eight persons have so far tested positive for monkeypox in the state.
The Commissioner for Health, Prof Akoria Obehi, who disclosed this to journalists in Benin City, said the Ministry had ramped up surveillance and other activities to curb the spread of infectious disease.
She, however, noted that all persons who were diagnosed with the disease have recovered.

FG confirms 16 new cases of monkeypox from 12 states

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), yesterday, confirmed 16 new positive cases of monkepox from 12 states. According to the latest update, Rivers has three infections, Anambra (two); Oyo (two); Taraba (one); Lagos (one); Imo (one); Edo (one); Gombe (one); Delta (one); Bayelsa (one); Akwa Ibom (one) and Bauchi (one).
The epidemiological summary shows that there were 37 new suspected cases reported in Epi Week 28 (July 11 to 17, 2022) from 21 states – Plateau (four); Taraba (three); Rivers (three); Oyo (three); Imo (three); Anambra (three); Ondo (two); Lagos (two); Kwara (two); Ogun (one); Kano (one) and Katsina (one).
Others are: FCT (one); Enugu (one); Gombe (one); Bayelsa (one); Delta (one); Edo (one); Nasarawa (one); Bauchi (one) and Akwa Ibom (one).
The centre observed: “From January 1 to July 17, 2022, there have now been 338 suspected cases and 117 confirmed cases (80 males, 37 females) from 25 states –Lagos (15); Adamawa (11); Delta (10); Rivers (nine); Edo (eight); Bayelsa (eight); Nasarawa (seven); Plateau (six); FCT (five); Ondo (five); Anambra (four); Cross River (three); Kwara (three); Borno (three); Taraba (three); Oyo (three); Imo (three); Kano (two); Katsina (two); Gombe (two); Niger (one); Ogun (one); Kogi (one); Bauchi (one) and Akwa Ibom (one).”
NCDC said three deaths were recorded in Delta Lagos and Ondo states. Overall, since the re-emergence of the disease in September up to July 17, 2022, 850 suspected cases have been reported from 35 states.
Of the total, there have been 343 (40.4 per cent) confirmed infections (228 males, 115 females) from 30 states – Rivers (61); Bayelsa (51); Lagos (45); Delta (39); Edo (18); Cross River (17); FCT (11); Adamawa (11); Imo (11); Nasarawa (nine); Oyo (nine); Plateau (nine); Akwa Ibom (eight); Anambra (six) and Ondo (five).
