    • 'Cacophony of coughing': Inside NYC's virus-besieged ERs
By MICHAEL R. SISAK, JIM MUSTIAN and JENNIFER PELTZ, Associated Press March 24, 2020 Updated: March 25, 2020 4:43 a.m.
      ...
Nearly 14,800 people in New York City have been diagnosed with coronavirus as of Tuesday, accounting for more than half the cases in the hardest-hit state in the nation.

More than 2,800 people in the city were hospitalized because of the virus — double the figure from three days earlier — and more than 600 were being treated in intensive care. The death toll rose to 192, and officials from the governor on down warned it will get worse before it gets better.

Hospitals are stretched to capacity -- and being asked to stretch further -- as the peak of the crisis threatens to hit earlier than projected

As of Wednesday night, nearly 33,000 cases had been confirmed in New York, an increase of more than 7,000 from the day before. At least 366 people have died. The city, impaired by the density that makes it one of the world's most vibrant places, bears the brunt of the impact, with more than 20,000 cases across the five boroughs as of Wednesday night. The mayor's office said the death toll had soared to 280, the biggest increase in deaths the city had seen so far - that's 28 percent of what NBC News estimates to be the total fatality number nationwide.

Makeshift morgues. Cases doubling every 72 hours. Death tolls spiking. Economic shutdown. Staggering unemployment. Not enough aid. The tri-state area is grappling with a months-long crisis that has shown no signs of slowing soon. The curve will flatten eventually, but meanwhile entire states, cities and everyday people are just struggling to figure out how to survive. “This will change us,”…

Coronavirus in NY: Deaths jump again to 519 in state’s deadliest day yet
Updated 12:17 PM; Today 12:00 PM
                            By Kevin Tampone | syracuse.com

Albany, N.Y. — Another 134 people have died from coronavirus in New York, bringing the statewide death toll to 519, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Friday.

A total of 6,481 people, about 14.5% of cases, are now hospitalized due to the virus. About 3.5% of the total cases, or 1,583 people, are in intensive care units, Cuomo said.

The state now has 44,635 confirmed cases, an increase of 7,377 overnight.

The news on deaths is sobering, Cuomo said during a press briefing in New York City. It’s the second day in a row the state set a new high point for deaths.

The number will continue to rise.

“It’s bad news. It’s tragic news,” Cuomo said. “It’s the worst news. But it is not unexpected news either.”...
