Total number of reported patients admitted (or have been) hospitalized: 5,784 (+625)

Total number of reported deceased patients: 1,339 (+166)

Total number of patients tested positive: 14,697 (+1,083)

    Explanation
Today, 625 patients have been reported as hospitalized. 166 persons were reported dead. Not all of these people have been hospitalized or have died in the past day.

The Data coronavirus report contains a graph with the number of hospital admissions by reporting day and deaths per day of death. Due to delays in the reports, these figures can change per day.

The first effects of the measures seem to be visible. The number of patients admitted to hospital and the number of reported deaths in the Netherlands is increasing less quickly than you would expect without measures.

RIVM National Institute for Public Health and the Environment is receiving information about the outbreak of the new coronavirus from various sources. The daily data of the NICE Foundation (National Intensive Care Evaluation) is also included in the report Data coronavirus in the Netherlands. These figures are continuously updated by the NICE Foundation. The figures in this report are therefore slightly behind the current situation.

Because not all COVID-19 patients are tested, the actual numbers in the Netherlands are higher than the numbers listed here.

Total number of reported patients admitted (or have been) hospitalized: 6,286 (+502)

Total number of reported deceased patients: 1,487 (+148)

Total number of patients tested positive: 15,723 (+1,026)

        Explanation
Today, 502 patients have been reported as hospitalized. Since yesterday, 148 persons have been reported dead. Not all of these people have been hospitalized or have died in the past day.

The Data coronavirus report contains a graph with the number of hospital admissions by reporting day and deaths per day of death. Due to delays in the reports, there are also extra cases from previous days.

The first effects of the measures seem to be visible. The number of patients admitted to hospital and the number of reported deaths in the Netherlands is increasing less quickly than you would expect without measures. A long breath is required to permanently slow down the spread of the virus. It is therefore very important that everyone continues to monitor the measures in the coming period.

        Excess mortality
Since the 2009 flu epidemic, RIVM has been monitoring the number of people who have died every week in collaboration with Statistics Netherlands (CBS) Central Bureau of Statistics. The CBS figures show all deaths in the Netherlands, regardless of the cause of death. There are usually between 2,700 and 3,000 deaths per week this time of year. The most recent mortality rates in the Netherlands show that in the week of 19 to 25 March 2020, an estimated 870 to 1181 more people died than expected in this week. A significant part of this is expected to be related to COVID-19. Which part is precise will only become clear from the cause of death registrations later. Because not all COVID-19 patients are tested, the actual numbers in the Netherlands are higher than the numbers listed here.

The number of patients who have (been) hospitalized has increased by 336 to 6,622. This increase is considerably smaller than a day earlier; then 502 new hospital admissions were reported.

The peak in the number of new hospital admissions in the daily RIVM reports was on March 31. Since then, the number of new admissions has been steadily decreasing. RIVM finds it too early to observe a downward trend. For the time being, the institute does not go further than the observation that the increase has been inhibited by government measures.

            ICU admissions also down

The number of corona patients in the intensive care units in Dutch hospitals has risen to 1360, according to today's latest figures; 36 more than a day earlier. Seventeen patients are in German hospitals, three more than the day before. Corona patients are located in all IC departments in the Netherlands.

Two days ago, the number of occupied beds increased by 82; yesterday by 51. Earlier this week, the average was 100. In total, the hospitals hope to have 2,400 IC beds available tomorrow or early next week, some 1,900 of which are intended for patients with the coronavirus.

"We have seen the number of admissions in the ICU increase less quickly in recent days than last week, the social distancing seems to be working," responds chairman Ernst Kuipers of the Landelijk Netwerk Acute Zorg. "So it is very important to continue that."

According to RIVM, half of all reported patients are aged 65 or over. Half of the deceased patients were 81 years or older. The youngest deceased patient was in the age category 35-39. This person, like most of the other deceased, had serious other ailments. In total, six patients under 50 have now died.

Dutch confirmed coronavirus cases rise by 5.3% to 18,803: authorities

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - The number of confirmed cases of the new coronavirus in the Netherlands has risen by 952, or 5.3%, to 18,803, health authorities said, with 101 new deaths.

The Netherlands’ Institute for Public Health (RIVM) said in its daily update that total deaths had risen to 1,867.

The RIVM continues to caution that the numbers reflect only confirmed positive cases and confirmed deaths, while actual numbers are larger

                      Overview of the numbers

Total number of confirmed cases who are or were admitted to hospital: 7,427 (+292)
Total number of reported deaths: 2,101 (+234)
Total number of confirmed cases: 19,580 (+777)

                      Explanation

Hospital admissions for 292 patients were reported today (current or previous). 234 deaths were reported. Not all of the hospital admissions or deaths occurred within the last 24 hours. In recent weeks, Tuesdays have consistently had the highest number of reports across the week. This can be explained by the fact that many of the deaths and hospital admissions that occur on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays are processed in the official records and reported on Mondays. This is visible in the graphs on the new page on
                      Coronavirus Data.

                                * The actual number of infections with the novel coronavirus is higher than the number mentioned here. This is because not everyone who may be infected is tested for the virus.

Hospital admissions for 189 patients were reported today (current and previous). 132 deaths were reported. Not all of the hospital admissions or deaths occurred within the last 24 hours. Some patients are reported later. For this reason, the figures are often supplemented with data from previous days.

Up until now 24.413 confirmed COVID-19 patients have been reported to the RIVM National Institute for Public Health and the Environment . The reports are from all of the 12 provinces, however with 411 (31%) most of the new reports are from the province of Zuid-Holland.

The last few days, care workers outside the hospital can also be tested if they have any symptoms. The first effect appears to be visible in the reports, because 550 (42%) of the new reports concern care workers.

The figures for the last few days are still in line with the impression that COVID-19 is spreading slower than if no measures had been taken.
