We need to sustain social distancing, respiratory hygiene and these new ways of behaving if we are to succeed in minimising the threat posed by COVID-19."

The announcement comes after the total number of confirmed cases in the Republic rose to 223.

The Taoiseach (prime minister) said that the Republic of Ireland is putting in place systems that people in this category will have food supplies and are checked on.

He added: "This is the calm before the storm, before the surge."

The total number of coronavirus cases in the Republic of Ireland has now reached 292.

This represents a rise of 69 new confirmed cases of Covid-19.
