  • South Korea: Suspected bird flu outbreak at a duck farm in Yesan city (Reported as LPAI)

SEOUL (Reuters) - South Korea on Saturday reported a suspected bird flu outbreak at a duck farm in Yesan city, south of Seoul, the first since the latest confirmed case about five months ago, local media reported.

The suspected case is currently under tests, and the final results were due by the end of the day, Yonhap News said, citing Seoul's agriculture ministry.

Initial tests at the suspected farm, home to 5,000 ducks, had given positive readings for the avian virus, it said.

The government plans to slaughter all birds in the farm as a pre-emptive measure.

In May, South Korea culled all domestic fowl in the Seoul area in a bid to contain bird flu after confirming 31 cases of the deadly H5N1 strain in poultry in the preceding six weeks.

Suspect Fujian H5N1 Returns to South Korea

          October 4, 2008

South Korea on Saturday reported a suspected bird flu outbreak at a duck farm in Yesan city, south of Seoul

Initial tests at the suspected farm, home to 5,000 ducks, had given positive readings for the avian virus, it said.

The government plans to slaughter all birds in the farm as a pre-emptive measure.

Although the above comments lack detail, it is likely that the initial positive readings will be confirmed, and the confirmed bird flu will be Fujian H5N1 related to the H5N1 in the region last spring. The outbreak is in the same area (see satellite map) which largely targeted domestic waterfowl. The H5N1 was a reassortant, with a clade 2.3.2 HA and clade 2.3.4 for the other seven gene segments. It was the largest H5N1 outbreak in South Korea reported to date and included a soldier/culler who was H5 PCR positive, but the H5N1 was denied by South Korea. Closely related sequences were reported for whooper swans in multiple locations in northern Japan, as well as domestic poultry in Primorie, in southeastern Russia. Recently local media in Russia described a more extensive outbreak, but it remains unclear in the additional regions were H5N1 positive recently, or last spring.

However, the spring outbreak signaled the movement of H5N1 to the north via wild bird infections. Although H5N1 was not reported in northeastern Siberia or Alaska, excessive poultry deaths were reported in Kamchatka. Birds that migrated north in the spring, would be returning to the region at this time, so an outbreak in waterfowl in South Korea at this time of the year would not be unexpected. Similar outbreaks in the region have been reported in 2003, 2006, and 2007, so the current outbreak was expected.

Of note, a respiratory disease has been reported in Prince of Wales Island in Alaska, which is a region in North America frequented by migratory birds at this time of year.

More detail on the outbreak in South Korea (and enhanced surveillance in Japan, Russia, and China) would be useful.

SEOUL, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- A new suspected case of bird flu was found at a duck farm in South Korea, the South Korean Agriculture Ministry said Saturday.

Routine tests showed that some ducks at a farm in Yesan, 134 km south of Seoul, have been infected with avian influenza, the ministry said in a statement. The ministry said detailed tests were underway to confirm whether the suspected outbreak of bird flu is a highly virulent strain of avian influenza. All ducks at the farm were culled in case of further spreading of the fatal disease, the ministry said.

Five months after the last confirmed case of bird flu in South Korea, a new suspected case of bird flu has been detected in Yesan in the nation?s central region, Yonhap News reported Saturday.

The Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Saturday said that it had discovered possible bird flu outbreaks at a duck farm in Yesan, adding the National Veterinary Research Quarantine Service is currently conducting a thorough investigation for confirmation.

?We are conducting a further DNA analysis to determine whether this is the case of the highly-pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI),? an official from the agriculture ministry said.

HPAI virus can cause severe illness and high mortality in poultry and humans.

The authorities plan to cull all the ducks in the farm as a pre-emptive measure. Since last outbreak, Korea has upped ante, vigorously carrying out inspections.

                          OIE-report, confirms H5N2: http://www.oie.int/wahid-prod/public...&reportid=7397

As part of the on-going control measures for avian influenza in the Republic of Korea, surveillance has been conducted since September in all parent stock duck farms.

On 3 October, faecal samples from a parent stock duck farm proved positive to avian influenza antigen. But antibody test results of samples from blood and eggs were negative.

The virus was identified as low pathogenic avian influenza virus subtype H5N2 by haemagglutination test (HA), neuraminidase gene typing and gene sequencing of cleavage site of the HA gene on 4 October 2008.

As a preventive measure, ducks in the farm were stamped out and the farm was disinfected.
