Andhra takes steps to prevent bird flu outbreak

Hyderabad, Feb 02: In view of the alert issued by the Central Zoo Authority (CZA), the authorities at the Nehru Zoological Park here have taken various measures to prevent the outbreak of bird flu in the park which houses over 1200 animals.

"We have taken all preventive measures keeping in view the alert issued by CZA in wake of bird flu outbreak in West Bengal," Zoo Curator A Sudhakar said.

The zoo authorities have stopped serving non-vegetarian food like chicken and eggs to animals in the zoo for the last two days, he said.

One of the preventive measures was colouring and tying ribbons to the birds for identification, the curator said.

Kakinada, Feb 6: The bird flu outbreak in West Bengal has badly affected the poultry industry in Andhra Pradesh.


With West Bengal, Bihar and Jharkand banning entry of eggs from Andhra Pradesh, the poultry farmers in the state are facing huge losses.

''As the Gulf countries banned the egg imports, fearing bird flu, the only alternative left was domestic market. But the local consumption is hardly 20 per cent. The cold storage facilities are limited and the situation is very grim now,'' National Egg Coordination Committee (NECC) Regional President T Upender Reddy said.

He said in East Godavari alone they were losing Rs 60 to Rs 70 lakh daily as the egg price had crashed from Rs 1.90 to Re one.

The poultry farmers of East, West Godavari and Krishna districts suffered a loss of Rs three crore daily, he said.

Mr Reddy said the NECC representatives had called on Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar and sought his help to overcome the crisis.

Mr Pawar had responded positively to their two major demands- lowering of interest rate to poultry farmers from the existing 13 per cent to seven per cent and announcing a two-year moratorium on repayment of bank loans, he added.

Precautionary measure to check bird flu

GUNTUR: Department of Animal Husbandry has commenced the exercise of collection of serum samples of poultry birds at various parts in Guntur district in the wake of incidence of outbreak of bird flu in Manipur and West Bengal. The samples would be sent to the High Security Animal Diseases Laboratory (H.S.A.D.L) at Bhopal, the only lab to test the presence of H5N1 virus, which causes Bird Flu in birds.

``We have collected serum samples from Amaravathi and Kotappa Konda area in Narasaraopet, where the presence of migratory birds has been reported. On Friday, we will be collecting serum samples at neighbouring poultry farms near the bird sanctuary at Uppalapadu."

"There are certainly no cases of unusual mortality in the district and this is only a precautionary measure as part of the country wide efforts to prevent the further spread of the disease,” Assistant Director, Animal Health Centre, Veterinary Hospital Ch. Malleswari told The Hindu on Wednesday.

Migratory birds are considered as the primary source in spreading the virus and local birds could get infected after they come in contact the droppings of migratory birds. The bird sanctuary of Uppalapadu is one of the largest of its kind with a presence of over 2,000 winged visitors. Birds like Painted Stork, Spotted Pelican and White Ibis etc are spotted in the season beginning from September and ending in February.

At a meeting held at Hyderabad with the senior officials of the Animal Husbandry and Health departments, a decision was taken to impart training to animal husbandry department personnel on culling of birds. An expert from Bangalore is expected to visit all district head quarters to impart training to the officials.

Hyderabad, Feb. 7 The poultry industry in Andhra Pradesh, which has taken a beating following the bird flu issue and the subsequent ban on poultry movement in West Bengal, sees a bigger crisis in the form of similar restrictions being planned by Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh Governments.

The ban could lead to sharp increase in the prices of egg and broiler chicken in Mumbai in the next few days, farmers here predict.

Andhra Pradesh sends nearly 50 lakh eggs to Maharashtra every day. Sudden stoppage could trigger the price hike.

Though the ban notifications would not mention the name of any State, Andhra Pradesh is going to be the biggest sufferer of such restrictions. Of the 5.5 crore eggs the State produces, 1.40 crore eggs go to West Bengal and North-East, and another 1.30 crore lakh to the central and northern States.

Worried, a delegation comprising Mr Kasireddy Narayana Reddy, President of AP Poultry Farmers Federation, Mr D. Rami Reddy, President of Poultry Breeders Association, and Mr K.G. Anand, General Manager of Venkateshwara Hatcheries, met the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, to ask him to take up the issue.

They asked the Chief Minister to talk to Mr Sharad Pawar, Union Agriculture Minister, and Mr Vilas Rao Deshmukh, Maharashtra Chief Minister, and persuade them to lift restrictions on poultry movement. The poultry industry in the State, which produces one-third of country?s eggs, could withstand the West Bengal crisis for two weeks, backed by undiminished local consumption.

?But the ban by Maharashtra and other States would be too hard to take,? Mr Narayana Reddy said.

Addressing a press conference after meeting the Chief Minister, he said there was no absolute problem either in Maharashtra or in Andhra Pradesh. ?There is no rationale behind the ban,? he argued.

Mr Subba Raju, Chairman of NECC (National Egg Coordination Committee, Andhra Pradesh), said that local traders lobby might have brought pressure on Maharashtra to impose the ban on poultry traffic.
