Tientallen zieken na vogelshow in Weurt

    De Telegraaf - vr 16 nov 2007,

WEURT - Dozens of people got sick after visiting a bird show of the Birdlovers Society in Weurt near Nijmegen. Of the six hospitalized patiens, two suffer from a double pneunomia. One is said to be in critical condition. The GGD (GGD Nijmegen) runs test to see if it is the contagious 'parrot disease'.

According to secretary Geert Willems of the Birdlovers Society, the show, held on november 3-4, attrackted some 150-200 visitors. Symptoms of parrot disease usually come after a day or ten.

Starting wednesday (14 nov), it turned out that many who were connected to the Society, had similar complaints of sore throats, shivering, and a flu-like feeling.

Five members of the Society are in hospital in Nijmegen, while an inspector is in hospital in Eindhoven.

The GGD Nijmegen says that estabishing/excluding parrot disease can be done quickly. But before doing so , the health organazation first wants to talk with the doctors involved and members of the Society, to hear what exactly did happen. The GGD expects to be able to tell more about the plan of action of this possible outbreak.

Parrot disease is spreading through faeces of birds and airborne particles coming from animals. The elderly are especially susceptible.
The organizers advise any visitors who have developed a serious cold, to visit a physician, because initial symptoms are similar to ordinary flu.

The bird that took part must be kept in quarantaine for ten days.

The organizers of a bird show in Druten have called off the event because of the infection.

    What is psittacosis? (Parrot disease)

Psittacosis is an infectious disease in humans that has mild, non-specific flu-like symptoms. Psittacosis refers to any infection or disease caused by Chlamydia psittaci, one of several microorganisms in the genus Chlamydia.

This disease can be transmitted from infected birds to humans. Parrot disease, ornithosis, and chlamydiosis are other names for psittacosis.
Humans can become infected with Chlamydia psittaci by breathing in the organism when the urine, respiratory secretion, or dried feces of infected birds is aerosolized (i.e., dispersed in the air as very fine droplets or dust particles). Other sources of exposure include mouth-to-beak contact, a bite from an infected bird, and handling the plumage and tissues of infected birds.

For accurate diagnosis of psittacosis, a doctor must know that the person has been exposed to birds and that the suspected birds are infected with Chlamydia psittaci. Laboratory examinations can identify the organism and detect the signs of infection. Patients who develop psittacosis require treatment with specific drugs. The disease is very responsive to tetracycline but is resistant to penicillin.

Not confirmed yet, would be very surprising if it is bird flu.

Birds can have a latent infection. That means they appear healthy and do not show any symptoms now but they can show symptoms later. These infected birds carrying the Chlamydia psittaci bacteria may shed the organism intermittently or sometimes continuously for weeks or months. Stress associated with nutritional deficiencies, overcrowding, breeding, egg-laying and prolonged transport may cause birds with a latent infection to shed infectious agents. When shedding occurs, the infected birds excrete the bacteria in the feces and nasal discharges and can remain infective for several months.

Life of Visitors Birdshow not at Risk

                Released: November 16, 2007

BEUNINGEN - The seven people in the hospital were admitted with a possible contamination of the parrot disease, are in bad condition. However there life is not at risk and doctors expect that everyone will heal.

That has Mayor Zijlmans Huib van Beuningen said Friday at a press conference on the suspected outbreak of psittacose after a birdshow in Weurt (municipality Beuningen).

As far as is known now, eighteen people became ill. Previously, the Public Health Service region Nijmegen reported sixteen sick.

                Elderly

The sick are all seniors around 70 years, says Zijlmans, who long have been in contact with the birds. According to the Public Health Service it has been a "limited outbreak?.

Re: Netherlands: dozens ill after visiting bird show

Expert says on Dutch Radio: the people who fell ill, were not ordinary visitors, they were organizing the show. For about a week they had frequent contact with the birds. Together with some stress and their age, made them fall ill.

"Perfectly allright to go to bird shows and enjoy their beauty" .

The number of patients in this outbreak is exceptional, every year people get contaminated with parrot disease, usually 1 or 2 at the time.

                      Victims parrot disease recover

                      Released: November 19, 2007 15:31

DRUTEN - The six people who are still in the hospital by the parrot disease, are recovering. In recent days no new cases of the disease have been reported. This was reported by the Public Health Service Region Nijmegen Monday.

Last week the parrot disease infected a total of 21 people on 2, 3 and Nov. 4 at a birdshow in Weurt. Seven people were in hospital. During the weekend one person came home, others are still in hospital.

                      Antibiotics

The parrot disease transmitted by birds often leads to pneumonia and can be fatal for the elderly. The disease is easy to control with antibiotics. The parrot disease is not known to be transferable from human to human.

The Food Authority VWA is examining the birds on the birdshow. The parrot disease in birds is also easy to cure.
