China finds suspected H5N1 outbreak among ducks

    Sat 15 Sep 2007,

[-] Text [+] BEIJING, Sept 15 (Reuters) - China has discovered a suspected outbreak of the H5N1 bird flu virus among ducks in an outlying district of the southern metropolis of Guangzhou, the Agriculture Ministry said on Saturday.

The ministry said on its Web site that by Thursday, 9,830 ducks had died of the outbreak in Guangzhou's Panyu District.

Initial tests by provincial officials showed that the birds had died of the highly pathogenic H5N1 virus, which can be transmitted to humans, the ministry said.

They had submitted samples to a national laboratory for further testing, it said, adding that authorities had culled nearly 33,000 ducks to contain the outbreak.

With the world's biggest poultry population and millions of backyard birds roaming free, China is at the centre of the fight against bird flu.

Scientists fear the bird flu virus could mutate into a form that could pass easily from person to person, sparking a global pandemic.

There have been 25 human cases, including 16 deaths, from the virus in China and dozens of outbreaks in birds that have led to the culling of millions of fowl.

South China city reports suspected bird flu outbreak

GUANGZHOU, Sept. 15 (Xinhua) -- China's southern city of Guangzhou has reported massive deaths of ducks in a village which are suspected to be a bird flu outbreak, according to information posted on the website of the Ministry of Agriculture.

On September 5, farmers in Sixian village, Xinzao Township in the Panyu district of Guangzhou started to report death of their ducks, and by September 13, 9,830 ducks had been reported dead, it said.

Samples of dead ducks were sent to the provincial animal disease prevention and control center, and initial lab tests showed the samples were positive with the highly pathogenic H5N1 virus.

Samples have been also sent to the National Avian Influenza Reference Laboratory and the result is yet to be announced.

Local veterinary authorities had culled about 32,630 ducks as of September 14, it said.

Sources with the provincial department of agriculture said they have sent staff to disinfect the affected area, and no further deaths of fouls have been reported in the Panyu district or nearby areas.

            "duck plague' 鸭瘟

            was in the original post

looks like h5n1 is currently used. the bbc article was probably talking
about earlier reports, although the 'duck plague' phrase may still be used.

Worldlingo has separate choices for "Chinese Simplified" and "Chinese Traditional". In this case of translating English to Chinese, I've tried both and got the same results, so assumed there was no difference. Thanks for the note of caution.

When translating articles in the past, I have found "simplified" to work best. When the translation was really bad, I would try "traditional" sometimes getting better results. Wonrldlingo is the best I've found for translating online. Does anyone know of a better free source?

As the world's largest producer of poultry, livestock and aquatic products, China has much to lose from outbreaks of animal diseases. It is estimated that animal diseases cost China 40 billion yuan annually.

China has reported a total of 25 human cases of bird flu since 2003, which have resulted in 16 deaths.

China's top legislature last month adopted the amendment to the law on animal epidemic prevention, which requires all animal owners to comply with compulsory vaccination policies, especially owners of poultry and livestock bred in rural backyards, and pets owners in urban houses.
