N1 virus has claimed two lives in April here and hospitals across the city have reported 10 other cases.

The first reported H1N1 death in the city this year was that of Laxman, 40, from Banikuppe in Ramanagaram district. Most patients live on the outskirts of the city and seek treatment in city hospitals. “Laxman had developed high fever and cold and when his condition worsened, his family brought him to Rajarajeshwari Medical College Hospital in Bangalore,” said Raju B C, a member of NGO Janaarogya Andolana.

The doctors then referred Laxman to Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Chest Diseases (RGICD), where he reportedly died two weeks ago.

85 people tested positive for H1N1 since January

More people appear to have been affected with the contagious respiratory infection, Influenza A (H1N1), in the last four months after a two-year lean period.

According to the latest report from the department of health and family welfare, of the 602 samples screened, nearly 85 people tested positive for the flu and nine of them succumbed to the flu since January 2014.

And contrary to the common conception that Influenza A (H1N1) raises its head in the monsoon?s wet and cold weather, this year more cases were reported in April when temperature soared in Bangalore.

More cases were reported in April at SDS Tuberculosis Research Centre and Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Chest Diseases, the designated government hospital where people are screened for Influenza A (H1N1).

BANGALORE: With 10 deaths and 120 cases of H1N1 (influenza A) reported from across the state this year, the Health Department has sounded a red alert. All through last year, only 122 cases were reported.

A circular has gone out to districts to carry out surveillance if more than five cases come from a single area. The department is also advising people to approach doctors if a fever persists for more than two days.

In BBMP limits alone, 55 cases have been reported since January 1. Doctors apprehend the virus may spread with the onset of the monsoons.

The number of H1N1 (swine flu) cases in the State has doubled compared to last year, according to statistics with the department of health and family welfare.

Just as there are reports that three people have died of swine flu at Hyderabad, Karnataka is not far behind. While 122 positive cases of H1N1 were reported in the State in 2013, the number is over two times with 298 positive cases being reported in 2014.

Even as the department claims that all preventive measures have been put in place, the total deaths due to H1N1 has gone up from 19 last year to 33 this time around.

The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) limits have recorded the highest number of cases at 108. The highest number of cases of confirmed death due to the virus is in Udupi. Recording 45 positive cases, the district has seen eight deaths due to H1N1. Mandya and Shivamogga have reported at least four deaths each. Davangere, Udupi, Mandya, Mysuru and Shivamogga have recorded high number of positive cases.
