The Ministry of Health and World Health Organization have announced that avian influenza H5N1 has killed a boy living on the outskirts of Phnom Penh capital.
According to their joint press release issued this morning, the 3-year-old boy is from Prey Lovea village, Sangkat Chom Chao, Khan Por Senchey.
The boy fell sick on Feb. 22, and he was admitted to the National Pediatric Hospital on Feb. 28, then he was transferred to Calmette Hospital on Mar. 02, and he died on the same day.
This is the 6th case of H5N1 this year, and the 53rd person to become infected with the virus in Cambodia since 2005, said the joint press release, adding that of the total cases, only 18 survived.
A nationwide public health education campaign using radio has been launched at the end of January, with prevention messages. Also, public health education campaign is being conducted in Prey Lovea village, using information, education and communications materials to inform families on how to protect themselves from contracting avian influenza. The government?s message is ? wash hands often with soap and water, before eating and after coming into contact with poultry; keep children away from poultry; keep poultry away from living areas; do not eat dead or sick poultry; and all poultry eaten should be well cooked.
