NHFPC notifies two additional human cases of avian influenza A(H7N9) in Fujian and Jiangsu


The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health (DH) received notification today (January 10) from the National Health and Family Planning Commission (NHFPC) of two additional human cases of avian influenza A(H7N9) in Fujian and Jiangsu.

The case of Fujian involves a 38-year-old man with underlying medical conditions who lives in Quanzhou. He presented with symptoms since January 3. He was admitted to a local hospital for treatment on January 8 and died this morning. His specimen tested positive for the avian influenza A(H7N9) virus by the relevant health authority of Fujian Province today.

The case of Jiangsu involves a 54-year-old man who lives in Nanjing. He developed symptoms since December 28, 2013 and was admitted to a hospital for treatment on January 5, 2014. He is now in serious condition. His specimen tested positive for the avian influenza A(H7N9) virus by the relevant health authority of Jiangsu Province on January 8.

To date, a total of 158 human cases of avian influenza A(H7N9) have been confirmed on the Mainland. They are in:

1. Zhejiang (55 cases),
2. Shanghai (34 cases),
3. Jiangsu (30 cases),
4. Guangdong (12 cases),
5. Jiangxi (six cases),
6. Fujian (six cases),
7. Anhui (four cases),
8. Henan (four cases),
9. Beijing (two cases),
10. Hunan (two cases),
11. Shandong (two cases) and
12. Hebei (one case).

The CHP will follow up with the Mainland health authorities for more case details.

"Locally, enhanced disease surveillance, port health measures and health education against avian influenza are ongoing. We will remain vigilant and maintain liaison with the World Health Organization (WHO) and relevant health authorities. Local surveillance activities will be modified upon the WHO's recommendations," a spokesman for the DH said.

"All border control points have implemented disease prevention and control measures. Thermal imaging systems are in place for body temperature checks of inbound travellers. Random temperature checks by handheld devices will also be arranged. Suspected cases will be immediately referred to public hospitals for follow-up investigation," the spokesman added.

Regarding health education for travellers, distribution of pamphlets, display of posters in departure and arrival halls, in-flight public announcements, environmental health inspections and provision of regular updates to the travel industry via meetings and correspondence are all proceeding.

"Travellers, especially those returning from avian influenza-affected areas and provinces with fever or respiratory symptoms, should immediately wear masks, seek medical attention and reveal their travel history to doctors. Healthcare professionals should pay special attention to patients who might have had contact with poultry, birds or their droppings in affected areas and provinces," the spokesman advised.

Members of the public should remain vigilant and take heed of the preventive advice against avian influenza below:

• Do not visit live poultry markets. Avoid contact with poultry, birds and their droppings. If contact has been made, thoroughly wash hands with soap;
• Poultry and eggs should be thoroughly cooked before eating;
• Wash hands frequently with soap, especially before touching the mouth, nose or eyes, handling food or eating; after going to the toilet or touching public installations or equipment (including escalator handrails, elevator control panels and door knobs); or when hands are dirtied by respiratory secretions after coughing or sneezing;
• Cover the nose and mouth while sneezing or coughing, hold the spit with a tissue and put it into a covered dustbin;
• Avoid crowded places and contact with fever patients; and
• Wear masks when respiratory symptoms develop or when taking care of fever patients.

Xinhua News Agency, Nanjing, 1 11 (XINHUA) -- Reporters from Jiangsu Health Office understands that Jiangsu New 1 case where people are infected with H N 7 9 bird flu case. This case is JiangSu province since the beginning of this year confirmed the first 2 case where people are infected with H N 7 9 avian flu cases. Patient Seon, male, 54 years old, on the afternoon of 9 was diagnosed as infected H N 7 9 avian flu cases, now a certain Nanjing Hospital for medical treatment. Currently, Jiangsu two confirmed cases were relatively stable.

Human infection with avian influenza A(H7N9) virus ? update

Disease outbreak news / 13 JANUARY 2014


On 10 January 2014, the National Health and Family Planning Commission of China notified WHO of 6 additional laboratory-confirmed cases of human infection with avian influenza A(H7N9) virus, including 1 death.

Details are as follows:

• 54-year-old man from Nanjing City in Jiangsu Province who became ill on 28 December 2013 and was admitted to the hospital on 5 January. He is currently in serious condition.
• 79-year-old woman farmer from Jiaxing City of Zhejiang Province who became ill on 2 January and was admitted to the hospital on 5 January. She is currently in critical condition. The patient had exposure to poultry.
• 30-year-old male from Ningbo City of Zhejiang Province who became ill on 2 January and was admitted to the hospital on 7 January. He is currently in critical condition. The patient had exposure to poultry.
• 59-year-old woman from Foshan City of Guangdong Province who became ill on 29 December 2013 and was admitted to the hospital on 2 January. She is currently in mild condition.
• 42-year-old woman from Foshan City of Guangdong Province who became ill on 5 January and was admitted to the hospital on 9 January. She is currently in mild condition. The patient works in the poultry wholesale industry
• 38-year-old man from Quanzhou City of Fujian Province who became ill on 3 January and was admitted to the hospital on 8 January. The patient had an underlying illnesses (including tuberculosis and pneumoconiosis) and died on 10 January.

The source of infection is still under investigation. So far, there is no evidence of sustained human-to-human transmission.

The Chinese government continues to take the following measures:

• strengthen surveillance and situation analysis;
• reinforce case management and treatment;
• conduct risk communication with the public and release information;
• strengthen international collaboration and communication; and
• conduct scientific studies.

WHO does not advise special screening at points of entry with regard to this event, nor does it currently recommend any travel or trade restrictions.
