01.02.2013 - 14:20 Strange Disease Hospital in Carmen de Areco: The differences between viruses and bacteria
The situation in the hospital Our Lady of Mount Carmel remains delicate. Since the Government of the Province, by Daniel Scioli, try to determine the causes of the disease that affected 14 people, of which two are serious. The Director of Primary Health Care, Ministry of Health of Buenos Aires, Luis Crovetto, said it could be a virus or a bacterium. Know your differences.

The Director of Primary Care, Luis Crovetto, ruled out that the case of different diseases such as influenza A and Hantavirus. However, the doctor could not say it is because the disease that affected the area involved with intensive care

The Health Ministry official in charge of Alexander Collie, said that since the province are working "seriously in advancing studies" and said that we must continue to wait patiently for the outcome of the analysis. "

The disease affected an intensive care patient, his family and nine nurses in the area, of which two are serious. Crovetto revealed that although it is likely that it is a bacteria, from the Ministry of Health does not rule out a virus-hospital.

Sometimes people mistakenly refer to viruses and bacteria as if they were the same. Having this confusion is normal since these organisms have some similarities, such as both may be causing disease.

Next, the characteristics and differences between viruses and bacteria.

                Characteristics of the virus:

Viruses are organisms acellular (cell) of nucleic acid compounds which do not have own metabolism and dwell need to replicate in cells of another organism, which are called host cells.

Viruses are acellular, meaning that they have cells, so there are scientific discussions about whether or not considered as the simplest form of life known so far, and we always need a host cell to live and reproduce.

Viruses do not breathe, do not move or grow. But do reproduce and mutate and can adapt to new hosts. Its size is really small, usually between 20 to 300 nm (billionths of a meter).

One of the most serious and important disease caused by a virus is HIV (human immunodeficiency virus).

                Characteristics of bacteria:

Bacteria are unicellular microorganisms. Its size is usually a few micrometers long and can take different forms according to which the cl?sfica (curved rods, spheres, rods, and spirals).

They are considered a single-celled organism. They have all cellular structure necessary for their growth and overall reproducci?n.En reproduce asexually, although there are cases in which the genetic material necessary for reproduction is passed from one bacterium to another.

The bacteria are not necessarily harmful to the body, in fact certain parts of our body, such as intentestinos need to maintain a certain balance in the amount of bacteria to function properly, if these bacteria are eliminated, for example when we take antibiotics to other conditions could result in diarrhea.

Re: Argentina - At least 15 people sick with flu like illness - hospital closed in Carmen de Areco - influenza ruled out

Uh oh. The timing here might be a clue; if the fatal case was already in the hospital by December 25 for an unrelated condition, it seems impossible that he could have contracted the illness outside the hospital.

From uncertainty to the overall concern
Infected patient died strange germ Carmen de Areco

As if it were a never-ending novel, new and bad news just met round the still unresolved case of the strange seed that hit not only the citizens of Buenos Aires to Carmen de Areco, but also to the medical staff and Medical Hospital Nuestra Señora del Carmen, and that threatens to spread given patient referrals since Wednesday confirmed the death of the first infected and therefore first patient with this germ, death occurred on Monday 21 January but only now known, thanks to inquiries by ANDigital.
This is a patient named Velazquez, who joined last December 25 to guard the said hospital, affected by an "ischemic heart disease", according to the information they agreed ANDigital, and whose death certificate mentioned among the causes of it to the initial diagnosis, the condition of a more "unspecified pneumonia," which in Creole means that nobody knew who had died.
The strange thing is not only the death of the patient, who was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Hospital Nuestra Señora del Carmen, which is now closed, but the person who took care of him during that month of hospitalization , his brother, is now also admitted by this strange seed in the ICU of the Hospital of La Plata Rossi, after he was transferred Tuesday from Carmen de Areco.
Velázquez's case is not unique, since it's next to five others, completing the six boxes that Rossi has insulation in the region. Joining them remaining nine cases are in the city of Carmen de Areco, eight of which remain "home insulation", and the remaining, he was in that condition, it would have turned into the hospital this Wednesday, are evident, well, the ups and downs in the financial health of all patients.
Among Rossi admitted to the hospital, a nurse suffered a serious crisis affected this Tuesday night, including life-threatening, but today is stable, safe.
The situation naturally creates chaos in the small town Carmena, the hospital staff refused to enter it, and maintains a bitter dispute with management of the hospital, headed by Dr. Soledad Arias, who this Wednesday ordered to occupy their posts work in an "urgent" on the pretext of having "sanitized X-ray unit and two wards common."
Reportedly, the guards kept minimal and workers will be addressed in the area of pediatrics, who works in the mobile hospital that the provincial Ministry of Health sent to the city on Tuesday night. Likewise, pregnant women will be transferred to the municipal hospital of San Andres de Giles, thanks to an agreement reached together the mayors of both cities, Marcelo Skansi by Areco, and Louis Ghione by Giles.
Amen to that, the hospital will remain virtually closed: only guard will enter the more complex cases, whose stay does not exceed 12 or 24 hours, and then be referred to different hospitals in the region.
For all this is that from the area of Health and Safety, with José Néstor Zapiola and Green at the helm, and the General Secretariat of the Union County Public Health (SSP), held a meeting on Wednesday, led by the owner, Miguel Ángel Zubieta, after which it issued a report that, among other things, mentions the "hospital infection emerged in the ICU", the infectious disease of the health portfolio, led by the director of Preventive Medicine, Dr. Angel Luis Crovetto, "made a report of the tasks with all preventive measures before reopening sectors," and wondered "why did not activate the alert network provincial infectious."
With this warning, which was launched in 2009 following the swine flu pandemic in the provincial and municipal hospitals, all infectious disease should initiate an observation protocol to any cases in any health facility Aires, and report on, being any the the same result, ie involving cases with positive or negative symptoms. "The response to this was negative", as reported from the SSP.
According to the same report, "Tables of infection began to appear on Monday, January 14, with the first three cases," that between Sunday 27 and Tuesday January 29 Rossi were taken to hospital in La Plata: "To date, we found 13 cases (hospital workers) plus 2 community, a total of 15 infected".
Given this evidence, the risk is great, not only for the people as well as against what is unknown is struggling, it is not known whether it is a virus or bacteria, although it was ruled Influenza A, H1N1 , and other respiratory viruses. It has formed a Ministerial Committee to monitor this situation but is it enough to do?

It's a mystery that for 20 days alters the usual tranquility of the residents of Carmen de Areco and worried almost to panic. Twelve people with symptoms similar to influenza A were derived from the local hospital yesterday to other centers of higher complexity Buenos Aires, after the provincial public health authorities discard an outbreak of influenza virus and other respiratory microbes known.

Before yesterday, the provincial director of preventive medicine at the Ministry of Health of Buenos Aires, Dr. Luis Crovetto, ordered the closure of the Hospital Nuestra Señora del Carmen until we know what virus or bacteria affected patients, who are eleven nurses and a relative of a patient in the Intensive Care Unit, which would have caused the infection.

Two of the six nurses derived Interzonal Hospital Acute General Rodolfo Rossi of silver are the most serious cases and are in intensive care. Before yesterday, Malbrán Institute staff, which is the national reference laboratory for respiratory viruses, began processing samples of both patients pulmonary secretions. "On Friday [for today] probably have the results," said Dr. Jaime Lazovski, Undersecretary of Health and Health Research of the Ministry of Health of the Nation.

As in the clinical report received samples from Carmen de Areco hospital has no detail of what tests were performed, in the studies Malbrán be repeated for all respiratory viruses, including influenza A (H1N1) techniques of molecular biology and genetics. "We do not know how to rule out the flu virus or other infectious microorganisms. Know that the Institute be dismissed Maiztegui hantavirus" added Lazovski.

Then you might find something that is already ruled out? "There are basic tests that are more likely to fail and more sensitive, more advanced, more technology. Could it be that we find in the Malbrán something that previously was not," said the official.

Meanwhile, Crovetto, who is in charge of the operation to reopen the hospital health of Carmen de Areco, said yesterday the NATION already made a first batch analysis of samples of affected patients in the laboratories of the Department of Rural Zoonoses Blue and Rossi hospital. "No need to repeat the tests for influenza virus because these laboratories have adequate equipment and discarded," he said.

But there are signs that suggest that this virus is in full swing in the United States and Europe. One of the two nurses hospitalized in intensive North traveled the country and returned with flu symptoms. "I was going to work with a high fever and hospital presumed it was a common cold.'s Medicated and unresponsive," said Mariela yesterday Iturralde, technical operator of hospital statistical Carmen de Areco.

In the other 11 affected, 40 years old on average, the initial symptoms were the same: widespread body pain, weakness, headache and high fever (39 or 40 ° C) and prolonged. "In the report, the doctors describe acute bilateral pneumonia, which seem to have a viral or atypical, which is what would have to confirm," he said Lazovski.

And pneumonia is also usually the most common complication of influenza A. For now, a hypothesis points to a nosocomial infection. "One of the things that catch our attention is that in November and December, the hospital had between 7 and 8 monthly deaths from pneumonia in adults who had consulted other cause. Were diabetic or hypertensive, said Iturralde, who is delegated ATE. And that drew attention to the statistics we manage both our population and because we are out of winter. "

The Ministry of Health of Buenos Aires reported no new cases, 2 patients were discharged with outpatient follow-up and 7 remain hospitalized in "stable" state and evolve "favorably" in hospitals Rossi, Cetrángolo (Vicente Lopez) and San Jose (Parchment).

Meanwhile, most of the 15,000 inhabitants of Carmen de Areco still on alert for what happens for 20 days in the hospital. They knew that a strange virus or bacteria was circulating in the health center. And so began brewing a kind of psychosis: hospital employees "told us that many times in a warehouse or other place not wanted or tried to attend away. Same thing happened with friends of their children, whom their mothers allowed them to join for fear, "said Vanina Rodriguez, ATE delegate at the Occupational Health Department of the hospital. The day before yesterday, a hospital employee had drawbacks in the local bus terminal when he wanted to buy tickets for their children.

Restlessness in Carmen de Areco upon detection of an outbreak similar to the flu, the Institute analyzed samples Malbr?n

LA PLATA. - As the Hospital Nuestra Se?ora del Carmen in Carmen de Areco, minimal attention was conducting on call for emergencies, despite fears of neighbors to approach the place, epidemiologists awaiting the results of studies conducted to towards infected people know the origin of the illness that forced the closure of the hospital.

Last Wednesday nine medical-two patients were infected in the Hospital Nuestra Se?ora del Carmen with a virus that causes symptoms similar to the flu, but so far has not been determined.

Spokesmen for the Ministry of Health's Office informed the nation that in the next few hours would be known Malbr?n Institute report. Through a statement, the Foreign Secretary of Health and Health Research, Lazovski Jaime explained that "being carried out analyzes to detect whether it is a virus, bacteria or fungi causing this infection and at the time does not seem to be a case of poisoning. "

The provincial director of Preventive Medicine, Ministry of Health of the province, Luis Crovetto, also said that if not detected any biological agent that would have caused this nosocomial infection samples were sent to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of the United States (CDC).

"We got the part of the two patients who are hospitalized in intensive care [in Acute General Hospital Interzonal de La Plata Rodolfo Rossi] and it was very encouraging picture. Whilst one is stable, not given much expectation on the another girl, "said Mariela Iturralde, technical operator of the hospital statistics, the NATION.

The other four people hospitalized were stable and his condition had worsened not from the time they were derived, Crovetto said.

Although the health center remains closed, yesterday began to normalize the emergency call service, albeit minimal. The implementation of care give supply, as workers counted because there were not so far many elements were required emergency or high complexity. "We must also say that people prefer not addressed. Reach the hospital of last resort", they said in the area.

To start with disinfection operatives, the Ministry of Health of Buenos Aires sent a team of epidemiologists zoonoses and Biological Institute to tour the hospital facilities. Crovetto said "intensive care area is closed and the rest of the hospital is sanitized exhaustively. The idea is that if Tuesday are given biosafety levels go, slowly, by operating the other sectors of hospital, except intensive care, where the infection originated. "

Although the symptoms are similar to those of influenza A (but was ruled to be the origin of the mysterious infection), became visible about 20 days ago, the health professionals at the hospital in Carmen de Areco reported that hospital authorities "made us come to work well and everything worked normally. were all very nervous," said Iturralde.
