?One or two sporadic cases have been reported since January. This does not mean the flu is spreading in the city. There is no scare unless the media creates one,? he added.

      H1N1 claims 3 lives in 3 months

Ms Suza A., a resident of Kalyan Nagar, succumbed to H1N1 influenza at Columbia Asia Hospital on March 27. With this, the death toll due to H1N1 in 2012 rose to three in Karnataka.

The H1N1 flu, which had created panic in the State during 2009-10, seems to have been sporadically surfacing this year as well. The earlier two deaths were reported from Victoria Hospital, where Marappa (45), hailing from Chikkaballapur died on March 3, and the other, Shanta (22) of the city, died at Deepak Hospital on February 22.

As per the State Health and Family Welfare Department records, from January 1 till date, the State has registered 71 positive cases of H1N1 from across the State, with a maximum of 59 cases from Bengaluru alone. Four cases are from Kolar, two from Shimoga and one from Chikkabalapur.

Officials try to hush up flu toll
          Bangalore, April 6, 2012, DHNS:

The actual number of deaths due to Influenza A (H1N1) in the State remains a mystery as health officials, including the health directorate and BBMP officials, are hesitant to divulge the information regarding the exact number of people who have succumbed to the dreaded disease.

The viral infection which is making its presence felt in the past three months has suddenly peaked with over 60 cases confirming positive to Influenza A ( H1N1) in the month of March alone.

According to BBMP?s chief health officer Dr Manjula, there have been nine deaths so far among which only two deaths pertain to BBMP areas. ?We are aware about two deaths in the City, one in Deepak Hospital in Rajajinagar and another in Columbia Asia hospital. We are not responsible about those patients who are from outside Bangalore, arrive here for treatment and succumb to the disease,? she added.

However, Dr Manoranjan Hegde, BBMP's nodal officer (communicable diseases) confirmed that there had been only four deaths so far including two in BBMP area and one each in Chikaballpur and Kolar.

While people continue to fall prey to the rapidly spreading H1N1 virus, lack of communication and co-ordination between the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and private hospitals is putting people at risk in the city.

On Tuesday, the BBMP claimed that there had been another death due to H1N1. The victim, the civic agency said, was a 30-year-old female named Gayatri from Kolar district who had been admitted to Manipal Hospital. But, surprisingly, the hospital denied the BBMP?s claims.

When DNA contacted Manipal Hospital, hospital authorities said there had been no H1N1-related death in their hospital.

Although the State health authorities claimed that the Influenza A (H1N1) was under control, they announced another death, this time from Davangere, on Wednesday.

Bangalore Swine Flu Update: 19 more people test positive

As many as 19 people have tested positive for H1N1 in various parts of Karnataka on Thursday, 16 of them in the jurisdiction of Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palika (BBMP). Joint director, communicable diseases, Dr Chandrashekhar Malagi said that no death was reported due to swine flu in the state on Thursday. The virus has claimed 7 lives since January this year and 106 cases have been reported this year.

This comes after yesterday?s report of mudslinging between a private hospital and the civic body where the BBMP claimed that a private hospital failed to report a swine flu (H1N1) death. According to protocol, every hospital has to inform the BBMP of any suspected H1N1 case, confirmed case or death due to the disease. Every day the civic agency has to compile a list of cases and deaths due to swine flu (H1N1).
