There is not enough information to suggest a cause. Possibilities may vary widely and include seasonal respiratory pathogens (including H1N1 and RSV), diarrheal illness, malaria, and dengue.

A severe state of malnutrition caused the deaths of six children Warao indigenous community in Cambalache in the Venezuelan state of Bolivar. The deaths occurred in the last ten days and another 16 children were diagnosed with the same picture.

The community is outraged by the lack of attention. The first two dead children were buried under a tree, as the Caroni municipality did not respond to requests for help to buy the boxes.

The head of the Sanitary District No. 2 Bolivar, Manuel Maurera, says that the flu caused the deaths. However, the community complains that the children died of malnutrition, since the 86 Warao families, forgotten by the public, living from collecting garbage in the landfill Cambalache without access to safe water and adequate food.

According to medical Luc?a Delgado, the ambulance type I, Cambalache, the main cause of the problem is, in fact, contact with the trash. "All Cambalache population is at risk because of living in the garbage. The almost non-existent food base also influenced the death of children, and which are not measures of hygiene and living in overcrowded," he said.

"I live here 11 years ago and worked with the children picking up trash, for there is nothing to do. We live in the city and do not help us, rather deceive us when they want votes," unburdened himself the chief, Antonio Valenzuela.

The Indians have no access to health and now 20 adults with malaria. The priest tells William Van Zeland no preventive medicine for the community or transportation to the place. "Some time ago they stopped making weekly health operating when the Indians go to the clinic will fill the hands of medical orders and many can not read or write," she said.

Although they could read the recipes, the Warao do not have sufficient income to buy the remedies. "We need to work when sick children send medical remedies that can not buy because there is no money, so the children die," he stressed Valenzuela.

Although medical authorities claim they were in the community over the past week using vaccines, both the priest William as the Indians vehemently deny that they have received support.

The leader of the Warao in Cambalache, Pedro La Rosa, said the report is a "lie" and the medical community has not for quite some time. For him, the Warao are treated as "animals."

Besides all this, the community complains that, after the death of children, have suffered threats from state officials not to report the facts to the media.

Maza said that two of the children were receiving treatment at the Hospital of Guaiparo in San Felix, from dehydration and severe malnutrition.

He added that "one mother proceeded to take her child against the advice of doctors and he died within hours of Cambalache community."

Three other children died two days later of respiratory failure, fever, diarrhea and malnutrition, while on Tuesday killed an infant 11 years from pneumonia.

"Proceeds from this meeting it was agreed to relocate to these indigenous Tucupita Amacuro Delta state, where it originated the Warao people," said Maza.

"Here came into play a situation that we must correct, as is the lack of physicians who know the language and customs of indigenous people and provide them with care in terms they understand and accept," he said of the case of the Indian mother withdrew their child from hospital Guaiparo.

He stressed that this situation means that many indigenous people living in urban areas of Bolivar state refuse to go to clinics and hospitals nearby, preferring to treat their diseases as their ancestral knowledge.

Pneumonia, chronic diarrhea, severe respiratory diseases and meningitis are some conditions that led to the death of six indigenous children Cambalache community, the report of the Institute of Public Health (ISP) which was obtained this way. The medical report confirms that poverty and misery harm the health of the inhabitants of this community. He noted that the state has failed to give clear answers to the situation of many Aboriginal people in the region, who live in the most critical conditions.

Indigenous peoples live in dreadful conditions. Occasionally drink water from the Orinoco, and recycle at the landfill Cambalache The Warao children six deaths occurred in less than 10 days in the community of Cambalache remain under a veil of mystery. Although the Institute of Public Health (ISP) identified some of the clinical causes of deaths, it remains to determine whether they are related and if it is a bacteria, virus or other factor that affected the children.

So far as official information the first two deaths (which occurred on 2 and April 5 respectively) were due to severe dehydration from diarrhea.

The third victim filed, according to a leaked report from the ISP to this newspaper, pneumonia. In this infant we were taken post mortem samples of liver, lung and spleen which were sent on April 12 the National Institute of Hygiene Rafael Rangel.

The fourth deceased, a 1-year-old also had pneumonia in his case it was the same procedure as above. A fifth victim, a girl of one year of age, was diagnosed with diarrhea and pneumonia. This was treated at a Barrio Adentro on 8 April and referred to the Hospital Dr. Ra?l Leoni Guaiparo, where he spent two days in hospital and medical leave without her mother withdrew on 10 April. That same day he died and samples were taken for analysis.

The last dead baby was diagnosed with meningitis and acute respiratory infection, had been hospitalized since April 10 and died two days later. In this death were taken samples of naso-pharyngeal swabs, serum, and "LCR". All sent to the National Institute of Hygiene Rafael Rangel.

Health actions
The report of death states that "they installed a health team in a special way (...) activities conducted vaccination, worming, medical consultations with drug delivery and spraying the area. Since then activated surveillance and detected two cases of children with diarrheal syndrome who were hospitalized and are still receiving hospital care. "

Detailed document that "we have seen in our visits, that this population consumes water from the river bank, where they also bathe, wash clothes and household goods. Defecation practice outdoors and sleep in plastic held in place by sticks. "

This report was submitted to the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples, Nicia Maldonado on Wednesday during his visit and he emphasized that "extraordinary health activities specific to this community will remain permanently until this situation is resolved after being evaluated, we believe that can only be solved permanently eradicating the livelihood of these people who is at the expense of landfill waste, which consumed and sold after sorting. This latter is done within the landfill with the children who live in that environment. "

Goes on to explain that "we must avoid at all costs to continue the influx of Warao to this area as usual, as this would aggravate social problems becoming unsafe and there present. In this situation the only speaker complainant was a Dutch priest who presides and NGOs have raised the situation reported to the parliamentary opponent of the state of Bolivar to the National Assembly. "

Authorities said Wednesday that plans for the Warao indigenous community of Cambalache continue, these include the construction of houses with adobe blocks, identification of land for productive and social development, the installation of a power house, which will assume the Ministry Indigenous Peoples, and fencing of the landfill to prevent entry Cambalache people while building a new municipal landfill.

However, despite the steps made by the local government, as the weeding of areas, cleaning and other started two days ago, some Indian spokesmen refuse treatment that is given to the cases and the delay before this situation.

Institutional Reviews
Tulio Gudino, representative of the Bureau of Indian Unity, said she was very concerned about what happens to Aboriginal people in this community of Puerto Ordaz, as stated dissatisfaction and denounced "the neglect suffered by Aboriginal authorities that represent them. "

"I think the unfortunate thing is that after six children have died, have been activated. Because we as indigenous representatives in all institutions, and reproached the attitude of all those officials who have occupied the office on behalf of indigenous and not doing anything for the benefit of the people. What is happening in the area of health in Bolivar is a neglect of government authorities. "

Gudi?o added that "in the region there is an autonomous institute, which certainly makes me sad that when you discover the news and dare to call an officer, as the case of Deputy Yaritza Aray, it is the custom of fun when you ask questions, which brings to mind the laughter of Andres Izarra, when he mocked the information, statistics and we get sad because the Institute of Indigenous Peoples has not presented a serious political will to meet people, as Cambalache " .

Said the former candidate for deputy to the National Assembly that "negligence" in the Autonomous Institute of Indigenous Peoples in the state review in its report and account of 2010 that resources are used "for the holding of meetings, to do anything, and personal payment, and do not know who you are paying and that is the responsibility of Deputy Araya and Jose Luis Gonzalez, who have been directors. And there is no serious policy that truly meets the people from any kind of view. "

He said "we reject the complacent attitude of the indigenous authorities with local government agencies, regional and national levels. (In) the case of Indigenous Peoples, which have been dedicated, and it is good to know, (is) to a fight between the Indian minister and the deputies Jos? Luis Gonz?lez to control the national commission on demarcation, if you cast an eye on the state of Bolivar, has controlled the deputy and the deputy Yaritza Aray Jos? Luis Gonz?lez, and in the 11 years that have run have failed to demarcate a single meter. "

Tulio said Gudino and Cambalache has happened in the death of six children in just ten days happens in other communities across the country, where medical care and the government's plans fail to improve their living conditions. For this he called for party politics aside representatives of native peoples engaged in work in terms of communities.

Agreed. Some of this may very well be the result of H1N1, such as the pneumonia, and maybe even the meningitis, but I think there is more than that going on here. Malaria may have been confirmed as well, and diarrheal illness is also likely.

According to medical Lucía Delgado, the ambulance type I, Cambalache, the main cause of the problem is, in fact, contact with the trash.

Besides all this, the community complains that, after the death of children, have suffered threats from state officials not to report the facts to the media

Vel?squez criticizes slow government action if Cambalache Warao
Saturday, April 16, 2011
Andr?s Vel?squez deputy criticized the slowness of government agencies when addressing the case of the Warao children died in recent weeks. Alianza Bravo Pueblo (ABP) proposes the creation of agro-ecological communities to locate such families.

The deputy said that make the complaint to the commission of Environment of the AN's case would be exposed, in detail, on Wednesday, but there was a reason for the National Assembly did not know, that day, on deaths six children Cambalache Warao: the commemoration of the "people's victory" of April 13, 2002 in Caracas.

"There was no quorum that day, so I could not raise it", sums up the intention, Andr?s Vel?squez, while he notes that there is no impediment to air views on the matter.

The first: the case should not be typecast only in the indigenous community. For the former governor of Bolivar state and member of La Causa Radical, unsanitary conditions resulting from the presence of landfill should be, once and for all, attacked.

Vel?squez notes that the complaint is the weapon that counts as a congressman. The solution they have it they (the ruling) in their hands. "

Relationship undoubtedly
The connection is undeniable, as the parliament: the deaths of infants is directly related to industry conditions, although the Government is endeavoring to say otherwise.

"I went to the dump. Nobody told me: I saw the children barefoot and naked, with a interiorcito, barely, with the vultures fighting over rotting food waste and old, "he describes.

Malnutrition, resume, was the trigger for the situation that began exactly two weeks ago with the death of a girl two years Warao.

"They can come up with stories: that is malnutrition and infections. These are diseases because they live in the entire corridor, within the limits of the dump
, "he adds.

Multiplied Problem
Vel?squez notes that the abandonment of indigenous communities in Ciudad Guayana is not limited only to Cambalache: the Warao who live near the building Riviera, Puerto Ordaz, and the Indian camp located in front of the terminal of San Felix, realize of the situation.

"This had to die six indigenous to the Institute of Public Health and would face the parapet to be mobilized and that they have called the Ministry of Popular Power for Indigenous People, which is not nothing but a string of cool living in that office. And here is not just the problem: to go see what happens in La Guajira (Zulia state), "he says.

Vel?squez notes that, if no other impediment, submit the complaint in the first session after Easter. The right word, at least, is already granted.

"Permanent endowment?

Since last Wednesday, after the visit of municipal and regional authorities Cambalache, Public Health Institute gave input to one of the modules of the sector.

For years, people in the sector have reported shortages and lack of personnel in medical facilities in the community, and the crisis came inputs. Endowment does it last, asks Vel?squez.

in that environment?.

Goes on to explain that? Must avoid at all costs to continue
Warao inflow to this area as usual, as this
increasingly aggravated social problems and unsanitary there
this??.

Authorities said Wednesday that plans for
Cambalache Warao indigenous community will continue, they contemplate
housing with adobe blocks, determining
land for productive and social development, the installation of a
power house, which will assume the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples

people while building a new municipal landfill.

However, despite the steps made by the government

Institutional Reviews
Tulio Gudino, representative of the Bureau of Indian unit, said
be very worried about what happens to the natives in this
community of Puerto Ordaz, as stated their discontent and
reported? neglect suffered by Aborigines from the
authorities that represent them?.

? I think the unfortunate thing is that after they have died
six children, have been activated. Because we as indigenous
representatives in all institutions, and the attitude of reproach
All those officials who have occupied the office on behalf of
Indians are not doing anything to benefit
peoples. What is happening in the area of health in Bolivar is a
neglect of government authorities?.

Tulio Gudi?o said that as has happened in Cambalache with
six children killed in just ten days, it happens in other communities
the country, where medical care and the government's plans fail
to improve their living conditions. For this he called for
aside partisan politics of the peoples representatives
ancestral engaged in work in terms of communities.

The deaths of six children waraos call us all to reflect. Photo William Urdaneta We are confident that these six children who died waraos during the last two weeks they could not ever enjoy a glass of milk, porridge or a compote. Also that once benefited from a sterilizer, bottle, a vaccine or a care in accordance with their development.

On the contrary, something we are sure of: they had to live during their short and limited existence, flies, disease and misery in a place where rats play with children. Using a common place, and saving the credit for Gabriel Garc?a M?rquez, it was a chronicle of death foretold.

Reflect the indignation, of course, is accompanied by a hint of desperation, especially when a week and half after the first death was that local government authorities and regional commented on it. Thus stormed Cambalache, carried on luxury SUVs, where there was none that moved the two children's bodies had to be buried under a mango tree.

What shall we play with all this? The question is not only aimed at government agencies, but also for us as citizens: actually pay due attention to the problem, or just we mobilized under the philosophy of "I'm OK and everything else I do not care?

The situation encourages us to reflect. There are more of an underlying problem in the case Cambalache, but the principal we all know: the presence of landfill, a hellish scene where entire families are fighting food scraps, while the vultures fly overhead.

We do not claim to be moralists or lecture anyone, but we consider it necessary to find the proper value to the death of these six children, and the best way would once and for all putting an end to this problem, a solution that benefits the community Warao. Otherwise, the lights of Ciudad Guayana not be enough to accommodate the large number of beggars would generate the act, alone, evacuate.

Education, teaching the value of work, creating a strategy for economic sustainability, the construction of adequate housing complexes for them, their link to a decent health system and the true dignity of its roots are some of the solutions propose.

If they are true, Ciudad Guayana may boast of great satisfaction. And foundations that day as it will disappear, as the focus of poverty will be a thing of the past. Who is logged in the idea? Meanwhile, come and join us for Cambalache
