    Department of Health Advisory: Possible Measles Exposures in Perry
    and Dauphin Counties
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    While investigating a cluster of measles cases in Perry County, the
    Pennsylvania state Department of Health has identified a suspected
    case of measles that could have exposed other persons while
    infectious, officials said today [7 Feb 2011].

    The possible exposures could have occurred at the following times and
    locations:
    -- Wed 2 Feb 2011, between 5:50 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. at a book sale
    that took place in the basement of the Newport Public Library, 316
    North 4th Street, Newport.
    -- Fri 4 Feb 2011, between 4 p.m. and 7:45 p.m. at the Lowe's Home
    Improvement Store, 4000 Union Deposit Road, Harrisburg.

    Most people in the United States are immune to measles, either
    because they received the Measles Mumps Rubella (MMR) vaccine in
    childhood, or because they were exposed to measles in the pre-vaccine era.

    However, the following groups of individuals are at risk of becoming
    infected with measles:
    -- Infants less than one year of age who are too young to have
    received the MMR vaccine;
    -- Persons who were vaccinated with an inactivated vaccine, which was
    used from 1963 through 1967, and have not been revaccinated;
    -- Persons born after 1957 who have only received one dose of MMR vaccine;
    -- Those who refused vaccination; and
    -- Those from parts of the world where there is low vaccination
    coverage or circulating measles.

    If you or your children are at risk for measles and become ill with
    the symptoms of this disease (see below) one to 2 weeks after
    possible exposure, you should tell your health care provider that
    you've been exposed to measles so that precautions can be taken to
    avoid exposing anyone else.

    Health care providers who suspect measles should call [their local]
    Department of Health for consultation and to arrange testing.

    Measles is caused by a highly contagious virus. Symptoms will begin
    one to 2 weeks after exposure and include a runny nose, watery eyes,
    cough and a high fever. After 4 days, a raised, red rash starts to
    spread on the face, down the body and out to the arms and legs. The
    rash usually lasts 4 to 7 days.

    An individual with measles can spread the virus to others for 4 days
    before and 4 days after the rash begins. It is spread by infected
    droplets during sneezing or coughing, touching contaminated objects,
    and direct contact with infected nasal or throat secretions. Infected
    droplets and secretions can remain contagious on surfaces for up to 2 hours.

    Complications from measles can include ear infection, diarrhea and
    pneumonia, encephalitis (an inflammation of the brain), and even
    death. Measles can also cause miscarriages or premature delivery in
    pregnant women.

    The MMR vaccine is given to toddlers when they are 12 to 15 months of
    age, and a 2nd dose is required for all Pennsylvania schoolchildren.
    However, individuals who have received only one dose of the vaccine,
    instead of the recommended 2 doses, may still be at risk of infection
    with this virus. The MMR vaccine can help prevent infection if it is
    given within 3 days of exposure. There is no risk in getting an
    additional dose of the MMR vaccine for individuals who may have
    already received it.

    For those in whom MMR cannot be given (pregnant women, infants under
    6 months of age, persons with compromised immune systems), or if it
    has been more than 3 days since your exposure, a dose of immune
    globulin can provide protection up to 6 days after the day of exposure.

    If you are not immune to measles and want to receive MMR or immune
    globulin, ask your health care provider or contact [your local]
    Department of Health.

    For more information about measles, see the Pennsylvania Department
    of Health's website at:

        Passengers on a Pacific Blue flight from Melbourne [Australia] are
        being warned they may have been exposed to measles. The Canterbury
        District Health Board said they have been notified of an infected
        passenger who arrived on Pacific Blue Flight DJ 60, which departed
        Melbourne and arrived in Christchurch at 3 pm on 31 Jan 2011.
        Passengers on that flight who were seated in rows 25 to 29 should
        contact Community and Public Health on (03) 364 1777.

        Canterbury Medical Officer of Health Dr Alistair Humphrey said
        measles is a serious illness, with 10 percent of people who have the
        disease requiring hospital treatment. Measles is at its most highly
        infectious stage before any symptoms of a rash appear. "The infected
        passenger was travelling to Christchurch for a wedding and would have
        been travelling during this highly infectious period," Humphrey said.
        Passengers on the flight would now be experiencing symptoms, he said.
        "Measles is easily spread through the air, and people sitting in a
        row close to an affected passenger are potentially at risk. Even
        people sitting further away could have been infected, for example,
        while walking past the passengers with measles, or while waiting in
        the airport gate lounge."

        Today's [9 Feb 2011] warning follows a number of passengers on a
        flight between Brisbane and Auckland last month contracting measles
        from an infected passenger. The 1st symptoms of measles are a fever,
        runny nose and sore red eyes. Then, after a few days, a red blotchy
        rash comes on and lasts up to one week. It usually starts on the face
        and spreads to the rest of the body. Children and adults with measles
        are often very sick.

        [Earlier, 12 people who were either passengers or in contact with
        passengers on Emirates Flight EK434 from Brisbane, Australia, which
        arrived in New Zealand on 11 Jan 2011, contracted measles virus
        infection. The transmission of measles virus by in-flight exposure is
        a very real possibility, and, as a consequence, the Canterbury
        District Health Authorities have prudently issued this 2nd alert.

            Three measles cases reported in Council Rock

            Posted: Thursday, May 5, 2011 11:02 am | Updated: 2:36 pm, Thu May 5, 2011.

            Three measles cases reported in Council Rock By Jo Ciavaglia Staff writer Calkins Media, Inc.

            The Bucks County Health Department has identified three probable cases of measles that could have exposed other persons while infectious.

            All three people were at least partially vaccinated.

            Possible measles exposures could have occurred at the following times and locations:

            Saturday night, April 30, at the Murder Mystery Dinner at the Cock and Bull Restaurant in Peddler's Village, Lahaska;

            Saturday, April 30, between the hours of 11 a.m. and noon at the Parx Casino blackjack tables.

            If you attended one of these locations during the time specified, and are susceptible to the virus, you are asked to watch out for symptoms of measles between now and May 17.

            The probable cases live in the Council Rock School District, and the affected schools and their students are being notified. Children who have not been vaccinated will be removed from the schools until the possible incubation period of illness is over...

            ...The probable cases here in Bucks County were exposed to French foreign exchange students who were symptomatic for measles, but returned to their native country prior to testing...

                Possible measles exposure case has Doylestown link By Jo Ciavaglia Staff writer Calkins Media, Inc.

                The state Department of Health is warning the public of potential measles exposure in Doylestown and three neighboring counties.

                The possible exposure is directly linked to a July 11 measles exposure previously reported at the Rite Aid Drug Store, 3145 Main St., in Morgantown, Berks County.

                A person who has been diagnosed as possibly having measles may have exposed other people to the disease on the following dates at these locations and times, according to state health officials:

                Bucks County

                * Hot Spot Restaurant, Old Dublin Pike, Doylestown, from 6 p.m. to closing July 22;

                Berks County

                * BB's Grocery Outlet, 6180 Morgantown Road (Old MOM's Mall), between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. July 19;

                * Chick-fil-A, 4675 Perkiomen Ave., Exeter Township, from 6:30 p.m. to 11:45 p.m. July 21.

                Delaware County

                * Starbucks, 443 E. Baltimore Pike, Media, from 7:15 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. July 22.

                Lehigh County

                * KNBT Bank, 73 Main St., Emmaus, from 4:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. July 22;

                * Pennsylvania Liquor Store, 1325 Chestnut St., Emmaus, from 4:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. July 22.

                Most people in the United States are immune to measles, either because they received the Measles Mumps Rubella (MMR) vaccine in childhood or because they were exposed to measles prior to the use of vaccines,

                But the following individuals are at risk of becoming infected with measles if exposed:

                * Infants less than 1 year of age who are too young to have received the MMR vaccine.

                * Persons who were vaccinated with an inactivated vaccine, which was used from 1963 through 1967, and have not been revaccinated.

                * Persons born after 1957 who have received only one dose of MMR vaccine.

                * People who refused vaccination

                * Foreign-born people in parts of the world where there is low vaccination coverage or circulating measles.

                Bucks County Health Department Director Dr. David Damsker said the possible exposure involved unvaccinated children in Berks County.

                Damsker added that county health workers are contacting Hot Spot employees to check their immunity...
