H1N1 virus kills 24 in one week

Egypt's Ministry of Health announced on Monday that 24 people died last week from the H1N1 virus (commonly known as swine flu).

A statement by the ministry said that 838 H1N1-positive cases were detected during the last week. The ministry predicted more infections until the end of January, when the breakout is expected to decline.

The ministry also stressed that the rate of infections is still within the natural limits of seasonal influenza.

It announced last week that 80 percent of H1N1 deaths were those of pregnant women and persons suffering from chronic dieseases.

The health ministry denies the existence of a swine flu pandemic, saying that there are a limited number of infected cases which only occur during winter time.

In August 2010, the World Health Organization declared an official end to the worldwide H1N1pandemic, which started during the spring of 2009.
