The quake was at a depth of 33km.

A Timaru resident told NZPA he was awakened by the shaking. His house was groaning and a bedside lamp crashed off its table.

Radio New Zealand said listeners were reporting particularly strong effects in Christchurch, with one saying his house "turned upside down" with crockery breaking.

Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker says there is "significant structural damage" to his city after this morning's 7.1 quake, with some eastern suburbs facing possible evacuation.

It was felt widely across the South Island, including Christchurch and Timaru, and there have also been reports of the quake being felt as far as Wellington. Several aftershocks have been felt.

Colleen Simpson said everyone was out in the street in their pyjamas looking scared and worried. There was no power and the mobile network was failing.

"Oh my God. There is a row of shops completely demolished right in front of me," she said.

Thank you to Giuseppe for contacting me about this.

I have spoken briefly to Sally Furniss, who is Vice President of FluTrackers and lives in Christchurch, New Zealand.

She and her family are fine.

She has also received a message from Kiwibird who also reports that she and her family are fine.

There is apparently a lot of damage.

                  The power is out.

The safety of the bridges is not clear.

Many things in Sally's house fell of the shelves.

I am calling her back on a hard phone line to get more information.

I just spoke to Sally again. She told me:

                    1) There is no running water.

                    2) Everyone is communicating via text messages on the cell phone system that is still working. One system is down.

                    3) There are many rumours that she can not verify.

                    4) There was a tsunami warning so friends of hers that live on the beach came to her house.

                    5) Some roads are buckled in Christchurch.

                    6) Her house is fine structurally but the inside is "a wreck".

It's a huge relief that Sally, Kiwi and their families are OK. Thanks for letting us know. They should also know that our thoughts were immediately with them.

While the information Sharon Sanders are collecting from our New Zealand Members are somewhat reassuring, the scope and magnitude of damages caused by this earthquake are far for being complete: the only hope is obviously that the number of people injured or killed will be small.

An warm hug to all of our Members and their families, friends, neighbors that are passing through this stressing experience.

A strong earthquake of 7.4 magnitude has struck 30 kilometres west of Christchurch, causing extensive damage to buildings and roads and cutting power to large areas.

The quake occurred at 4.35am at a depth of 33 kilometres.

There have been several aftershocks; the first of magnitude 4.6, the second of magnitude 3.9 and the third magnitude 4.3.

Lines company Orion says power is off and from the Rakaia River south of Christchurch, through to the Waimakariri River in the north.

Power is also cut across the Canterbury plains through to the foothills of the Southern Alps.
