MOSCOW. Jan 3 (Interfax) - Russia entered New Year without a flu epidemic, chief sanitation doctor Gennady Onishchenko has announced.
"The sickness rate in the first days of January is below the epidemic level. The rise in the rate in several regions among schools students was very luckily stopped by New Year holidays," he told Interfax on Tuesday.
"Hence Christmas tree parties for children can be arranged without fearing the spread of a flu epidemic," he said.
Onishchenko said the maximum possible number of vaccinations against flue had been made in 2006. "We made 99.9% of the vaccinations planned in the framework of the national health project. Out of the 22 million people whom we intended to vaccinate, we vaccinated 21.8 million. All the funds were assigned from the federal budget," he said.
He said that a total of 28.05 million people were vaccinated. "This is the highest figure ever in this country and amounts to approximately 20% of the population," he said.
Onishchenko also spoke of bird flu. After the cases in Egypt territorial divisions of Rospotrebnadzor consumer rights' watchdog were instructed to conduct respective monitoring and the results indicate that there is no bird flue in Russia now, he said.
