Re: So. American Deaths Reported: Tally

This is quite a massive quantity of data you have assembled Shiloh. Thanks for making the effort. This information is crucial to have, especially the case details for us to have an understanding of what is happening in SA.

As you know, the more case detail we have, the better. Case detail is essential if we are to have an understanding of this pathogen. The better we understand it, the better equipped doctors everywhere are to deal with it and this is the principal reason that this thread is very important.

It is likely that there are many health professionals within SA that are visiting FTs and seeking information on the novel strain that might be of use to them in both the clinic and hospital. What would be very helpful is for those visitors who have case information to share it with us as long as patient confidentiality can be protected.

The more information we have about each case, the better informed the medical community will become about this virus. The more we know, the better equipped we will be to fight it.

As far as I know, this may well be the only open forum where this data is being compiled. If there are others, I would urge them to share information with each other as we have found this very useful on Appleblossum's thread focused on US deaths. It helps by providing confirmation of case details, error checking for others, and to add new information to the database that was missed by one or the other archive.

Compiling this record and the case details is a noble act. It is very hard work and takes hours of tedious searching to accomplish. I for one would be very grateful to anyone who can provide us with additional information on even one of the cases archived here by Shiloh.

We are a multilingual site and have no problems with posts in Spanish, Portagese or English. Use whatever language you are most comfortable with.

All contributions are important no matter how small you might think them to be.

Best wishes and may God be with us all in this trying time,

Re: So. American Deaths Reported: Tally

Thanks again Shiloh for these reports.

Having read through them there are several things that stand out which I wish to share with our visitors and members.

First is that the ages of the deceased are consistent with those seen in the US. There are very few deaths if any reported in those over age 60 with the majority being people being between age 20 and 50 with a large contingent of children and adolescents.

What is needed here is to place all these cases in a database so they can be sorted by age, sex, country, occupation, risk factors (obesity), and pre-existing medical conditions like diabetes, hepatitis and immune deficiency. Any volunteers?

Doing this will permit us to have greater insight into the data and would be greatly appreciated.

Second, as seen in the US, the SA victims do seem to have a pretty high prevalence of pre-existing medical disorders like those mentioned above that affect their health in significant ways. There are several deaths reported where the patient was described as very obese, many are diabetic, and some have hepatitis or an unspecified immune compromising disease. These observations have been made in the US as well but because our PH authorities have elected to keep our case information hidden, their credibility is in question.

The information provided from Argentina, where the bulk of the deaths have been recorded has of late lacked the transparency seen initially. Regrettably it appears that their PH officials have been instructed to follow the opaque US model from here on out. The data from Uruguay and Paraguay is also rather scanty.

The information from Chile in particular and that from the other countries reporting is most informative. By informative I mean that the case reports include the patient's initial symptoms, age, gender, and at times their occupation. The specific co-morbidities are given along with some sense of their hospital course and cause of death. These case reports include chest X-ray findings as well as whether or not the patient had multi-organ failure.

Reports of this nature provide us with a much better picture of how the disease is affecting these patients than what is being provided by US authorities. As a treating US physician I am very grateful to have access to this very valuable information and can only wonder why my PH officials have decided that they have the right and duty to withhold it from us. IMO this decision is wrong and will lead to poorer outcomes for US citizens who become severely ill with influenza both now and in the future. The lack of transparency will have only one effect on the health of the US public and that is to harm it. Is harming the health of the nation the role of our public health authorities?

If the pandemic becomes severe in this country it is very likely that those within the US government who made the decision to withhold this information from the public, medical and scientific community will be held accountable for this act. The venue could be before Congress or even a criminal court but if not these then before St. Peter. There will be no escape for those whose actions result in great harm no matter what the excuse.

At any rate, we have much we can learn from every severe case of novel influenza and I for one am very appreciative of the work Shiloh has done on this thread.

We need an on-line collaborative relational database for FT members. Does anyone know where we can set up such a database? Quickbase, Trackvia, and Caspio Bridge may be suitable web locations ("cloud computing"), but they all charge monthly rates for multiple users. These companies have been contacted with a request to donate access and storage space to FluTrackers, but so far, none has been willing to donate the access.

Do any FT members have a creative solution that doesn't require programming knowledge for the people who enter the data? You can post in this thread or send me a Private Message (PM).
