              Indonesian man dies of bird flu, official says

              <!-- END HEADLINE --> <!-- BEGIN STORY BODY --> 12 minutes ago
              An Indonesian factory worker died of bird flu, bringing the death toll in the country worst hit by the virus to 112, a top health official said Sunday.

              The 19-year-old died last week in a hospital just west of the capital, Jakarta, Nyoman Kandun, the director general of communicable disease control at the Health Ministry, said by text message. He gave no additional information.
              Indonesia has regularly recorded human deaths from bird flu since the virus began ravaging poultry stocks across Asia in 2003. Its toll of 112 accounts for nearly half the 240 recorded fatalities worldwide.
              Bird flu remains hard for people to catch, but health experts worry that the virus could mutate into a form that passes easily between humans, possibly triggering a pandemic that could kill millions. So far most human cases have been linked to contact with infected birds.
              Scientists have warned that Indonesia, which has millions of backyard chickens and poor medical facilities, is a potential hot spot for the start of a global pandemic.

                Re: Indonesia Human Cases 20th June 2008 +

                AKARTA, Aug 3 (Reuters) - A 19-year-old Indonesian man died from bird flu last week, a health ministry official said on Sunday, bringing the total death toll from the virus in the Southeast Asian country to 111. Nyoman Kandun, the health ministry's director-general of communicable disease control, said tests confirmed the man was infected with the H5N1 strain of avian influenza when he died last week in a hospital in Tangerang, west of Jakarta.

                Kandun, who responded via mobile phone text, did not elaborate. The H5N1 virus is known to have infected 385 people in 15 countries, killing 243, since late 2003, according to the World Health Organization's June 19 tally.

                Indonesia has the highest toll of any nation. Although bird flu remains an animal disease, experts fear the H5N1 virus might mutate into a form easily passed from human to human, sparking a pandemic in which case millions could die. AP counts the July 10 death. Others don't because Indonesia refused to confirm (or deny). WHO is still at 110 because Indonesia has not officially confirmed either July death with an official announcement.

                                Talk about a hodge-podge of case 'facts'! We have:

                                Deceased had chickens in his house that died suddenly
                                Deceased neighbors had chickens that died suddenly, that he helped bury
                                Deceased mother had chickens that died not so recently

                                As Al has pointed out, reports of deceased patients residence may be misreported (and we don't know which is correct) and their occupation/age or other personal facts may also be variously reported or mis-attributed to previous patients (Niman's comment above).

                                The actual cause of death may be equivocated when coinfection with other pathogens is detected (thus allowing the government to officially NOT report these deaths as H5N1 related) OR when antivirals administered immediately upon preliminary diagnosis (but too late to be effective) complicate virus detection.

                                Morbidity/morality figures are also in question, depending on the source quoted.

                                Thus, the facts behind each case must be teased out from multiple reports, including indications of family/caregiver case clusters.

                                That is the unique utility of this website.
