DOH: Mers-Cov patient confined at Davao hospital

    Wednesday, September 3, 2014

THE second case of the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome–Coronavirus (Mers-Cov) in the country is now confined at the Southern Philippines Medical Center in Davao City, said the Department of Health (DOH).

In a press conference in Manila on Wednesday, Health Secretary Enrique Ona said a 37-year-old nurse identified only as "AP" is presently confined at the hospital along with her family, which was placed under close observation.

"Dinala na sila kahapon sa Southern Philippines Medical Center at pinadala na for testing ang throat swab and we should know result mamayang gabi. Positive na siya doon, we are just making confirmatory tests. Her family was also advised to be isolated," said Ona.

"AP", until now, has not shown any symptoms of the Mers-Cov, Ona said.

If tested positive, the patients will have to remain in the hospital until they are tested negative of the virus.

The DOH said "AP" is actually one of the two Filipina nurses that arrived from Dammam, Saudi Arabia on board Saudia Airlines Flight SV870 last Friday has been found positive of the virus based on the test results done to them in their workplace back in August 25.

"This particular patient in Saudi Arabia, hindi na hinintay ang result. Pagdating dito, dun nalaman ang test result sa Saudi na positive for Mers-Cov after the call from the nursing supervisor," said Ona.

As for the other Filipina nurse identified as "CB", Ona said she and her family have already been brought to the Lung Center of the Philippines (LCP) to undergo testing on Tuesday.

"Fortunately, this morning, lumabas ang results nung tests with the nurses and her family… eight of them are all negative," said Ona.

He explained that the family members of the 49-year-old "CB" were also tested after "AP" stayed in their house upon their arrival until she boarded a Cebu Pacific flight to go home to General Santos City last Sunday.

He related that "CB" as well as two family members suffered from fever and sore throat but were eventually found negative of the Mers-Cov.

The family of "CB" from San Jose del Monte, Bulacan, is already set for discharge from the LCP in Quezon City.

MANILA - The Department of Health (DOH) is now monitoring a Filipina nurse who tested positive for the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome-Coronavirus (MERS-CoV) in Saudi Arabia.

In a press conference on Wednesday, Health Secretary Enrique Ona said the 37-year-old nurse, along with another 49-year-old Filipina nurse, arrived in Manila last Friday.

Ona said the two nurses, who were working in the same hospital in Saudi Arabia, both underwent medical examination there before leaving for Manila. However, they did not wait for the results of the tests.

Ona said the health department received a call from the nurses' supervisor early morning on Tuesday, saying that one of them had tested positive for MERS-CoV.
He said the nurse who tested positive for the virus hails from General Santos City while the other who tested negative is from San Jose del Monte, Bulacan.

Filipina nurse tested negative for MERS-CoV, says Philippine gov't

        English.news.cn 2014-09-05

MANILA, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- The Philippine Department of Health (DOH) said Friday that a Filipina nurse, who was initially reported positive for the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome-Corona Virus (MERS-CoV), turned out to be negative for the virus based on the results of confirmatory tests.

DOH spokesman Lyndon Lee Suy said this prompted the Philippine government to suspend its efforts to track down the co-passengers of the 37-year-old nurse.

The DOH had earlier announced that the nurse, whose identity was not disclosed by Philippine officials, was infected with MERS- CoV, citing a report it obtained from Saudi Arabia.

"Whether the report was accurate or not, what's good is that people report to us. That's what we encourage people to do," said Luy when asked about the initial information relayed to the DOH about the nurse's health condition.

Re: Philippines - DOH: Confirmatory test of nurse with suspected Mers-Cov turns out negative

I am going to leave this case on the FT coronavirus list. The second test was not done from the same sample, or in the same time frame, as the first test. It appears the first test was done on August 25 in Saudi Arabia. The Saudis know how to test for coronavirus MERS. Now, some 10 days later, she tests negative. This could represent that she is recovered.
