DBD Cases Down by 50 percent in Jakarta
    BERITAJAKARTA.COM ? 1/31/2010 5:02:01 PM

The city government?s program of mosquito nest eradication (PSN) on Fridays has started resulting in good results. The success can be seen from the declining numbers of dengue fever (DBD) cases recorded in Jakarta.

Based on the health agency?s data, there were only 162 cases recorded in January 2010, fifty percent lower than the number of 324 cases recorded during the same period of last year. Of the 162 cases, 17 cases occurred in Central Jakarta, 7 cases in North Jakarta, 22 cases in West Jakarta, 43 cases in South Jakarta, and 73 cases in East Jakarta.

The success, particularly in North Jakarta, has gained appreciation form Jakarta Capital City Governor Fauzi Bowo, considering the municipality was previously the area with the highest number of DBD.

?North Jakarta municipal administration deserves appreciation for their success in eradicating the disease,? said Fauzi Bowo, Sunday (1/31).

The governor assessed that the PSN and 3M plus (closing, cleaning, and burying; plus checking on mosquito larvae) programs had been successfully implemented. ?I hope this trend can be maintained, so that North Jakarta can be totally free from DBD,? he said.

Fauzi Bowo also asked authorities in five administrative areas to remain active in undertaking efforts to fight DBD.

Head of Jakarta Health Agency, Dien Emmawati explained that the city had also experienced the decline last year; with a total of 18,366 cases, down from an estimated 28 thousand cases in 2008. The details are; 1,863 cases in Central Jakarta, 3,766 cases in North Jakarta, 2,583 cases in West Jakarta, 4,976 cases in South Jakarta, and 5,178 cases in East Jakarta.

Dien said that poor DBD patients could seek medical treatment at six city?s regional hospitals and 85 referral- private hospitals, under the city`s free health service for the poor ? Gakin (Keluarga Miskin) program.

?If Koja hospital is already fully occupied; with the same procedure, North Jakarta residents can also receive medication in other hospitals, such as Tugu and Pelabuhan hospitals,? Dien said, adding that people who could not afford to pay the transportation cost to carry patients to hospitals, can use free ambulance service provided by Jakarta health agency.

January, East Jakarta Sees Increase in the Number of DBD
      BERITAJAKARTA.COM ? 1/31/2010 4:05:45 PM

Following the recent high intensity of rain, East Jakarta Health Agency keeps up its handling efforts towards the threat of dengue fever (DBD). Throughout January, the municipality has seen an increase in the number of dengue fever cases, compared with in December last year.

To curb the spread of the disease, the local government conducts various attempts such as the program of mosquito nest eradication (PSN), and the socialization to the residents on the importance of keeping environment clean. ?We hope people can also do the PSN program by themselves (self-jumantik), besides the PSN program on Fridays, within 30 minutes,? Paripurna Harimuda told beritajakarta.com, Sunday (1/31).

Data from East Jakarta Health Agency shows during January 2010, the highest number of dengue fever cases took place in Durensawit sub-district, with 64 cases; followed by Cakung sub-district with 57 cases, Pulogadung 52 cases, Kramatjati 46 cases, Ciracas 42 cases, Pasarrebo 41 cases, Jatinegara 32 cases, Matraman 29 cases, Makassar 22 cases, and Cipayung sub-district with 22 cases.

Among the areas classified as the red zones (19 urban villages in total) are Kayuputih urban village (Pulogadung), Cibubur (Ciracas), Cipinangmuara (Jatinegara), Cijantung (Pasarrebo), and Utankayu Selatan (Matraman), while those among the green zones are Kampungmelayu urban village (Jatinegara), Cililitan (Kramatjati), and Pondokkopi (Durensawit).

In the contrary, the agency recorded no case of dengue fever in December last year; no areas as red zones; while some 27 and 38 urban villages were declared as the green and red zones respectively.

Head of Section of Health Control of the health agency, Domdom Karolina Nadeak said the number of dengue fever cases in East Jakarta would be certainly down should the residents really implement the self-jumantik. ?PSN should not only be done by the officers,? Domdom stated.
