Mexico is prepared for the "highest peak" of influenza A (H1N1)

The Mexican government carries out an intense campaign of vaccination against influenza virus A (H1N1) across the country to meet an expected surge in the number of patients in the last days of December and the first weeks of January.

Last Friday, the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) initiated the National Vaccination Campaign against infuenza virus A (H1N1), whose first stage is directed to health personnel including doctors and nurses, pregnant women and children and elderly.

The general director of the IMSS, Daniel Karam, testified then the application of the vaccine institute two nurses, a nursing student and a member to Social Security, these two last pregnant.

The federal government purchased 30 million vaccines, of which 12 million will be applied directly by the IMSS.

The first case of influenza A (H1N1) occurred in Mexico in April this year, and 30 November 2009 the Ministry of Health (SSA) and recorded 65,672 confirmed cases with 656 deaths.

The highest number of deaths (68.8 percent) occurred in persons 20 to 54 years of age, of whom 50.2 percent were men and 49.8 percent female.

The main symptoms of the deceased were fever (87.3 percent), cough (83.4), malaise (60.7), dyspnea (breathing difucultad, 46), expectoration (41) and headache ( headache, 32.8 percent).

The 65,672 confirmed cases are distributed in all 32 states of the republic, but most of them were recorded in Mexico City (7,377), followed by San Luis Potosi (4,074), State of Mexico (4,018), Nuevo Le?n (3,726 and Chiapas (3,647).

The secretary (minister) Mexican Health Jose Angel Cordova, said Thursday that there is some reassurance about how the virus behaves influenza A (H1N1), "but in no way will remain vigilant because there are still times more difficult, "he said.

He referred to the fear that in the last 15 days of December and the first weeks of January has the "highest point" of cases, because in cold and dry faster transmitting the virus, as reported at the 12th Regular Meeting of the National Health Council, held in Aguascalientes (center).

Cordova noted that the knowledge we now have about the virus and its lethality, with a less-than-expected impairment, "gives some reassurance, but by no means think that this should not be attacked with any impact."

The official staff of health institutions to guard during December and even contemplated the possibility of using vaccines for the new year.

Health Secretary based his optimism on the fact that "has been somewhat the number of personnel stationed serious boarding and the number of deaths.

He explained that this was possibly due to the outbreak of April, June and July helped protect many people, since it is rare that people have caught the flu again.

The Institute of Epidemiological Diagnosis and Reference, for its part reported on the detection of mutation in the first case of human influenza virus A (H1N1).

The institute's director, Celia Alpuche Aranda, said he performed to determine if the mutation makes the virus more dangerous or not.

He reported that these studies were commissioned by the World Health Organization (WHO), because they also found cases in Brazil, China and the U.S..

Because of the possibility of infection increase, Mexican authorities found that some unscrupulous traders selling counterfeit drugs against influenza via the Internet, telephone and street markets.

The head of the Federal Commission for Protection Against Health Risks (Cofepris), Miguel Angel Toscano Velasco said on Tuesday that need reports that private doctors are trying to defraud the public by ensuring they have the human influenza vaccine, which which is false.

The specialist called on people not to fall into the hands of those who sell fake or antiviral Tamiflu (specific antiviral against influenza A) in informal trade.

The Mexican government is more able to deal effectively with influenza A (H1N1) with a loan of $ 491 million awarded by the World Bank (WB) last week.

The financial agency reported from Washington that the ability to monitor the spread of the virus's strength lies in the National Epidemiological Surveillance System (SINAVE) of Mexico.

Through World Bank loan aims to help the Mexican government to monitor the spread of HIV, mitigate the effects of a second wave, but above all to strengthen the Mexican health system. (Xinhua)

Praised Mexico's actions against human influenza

The government of Mexico faces effectively the second wave of infections of influenza A (H1N1) during the winter season, said pulmonologist Mariana Martinez Avila, National Institute of Respiratory Diseases (INER).

In an interview with Xinhua, said the Mexican specialist in late November began promptly National Vaccination Campaign against influenza A virus, to which "seeks to mitigate the spread of the disease."

"This project plans to vaccinate more than 30 million Mexicans in different stages," Vazquez said.

At this early stage, he said, are immunized only to pregnant women, children and medical staff of the health sector.

However, the doctor noted that people should follow the health measures implemented the government of Mexico since the virus appeared in April.

"They should wash their hands several times during the day and be alert to any symptoms that arise, such as temperature greater than 39 degrees, red eyes, runny nose and malaise," he said.

Questioned about the effects of immunization, the expert said that "until now there have been no adverse reactions among those who have applied the influenza vaccine.

"There will always be situations, perhaps people who are allergic to egg products, with which the vaccine is produced, but the sensitive population shall be evaluated individually," he said.

Avila Martinez emphasized that the seasonal flu vaccine is not enough to protect themselves from influenza A (H1N1).

"It is true that the vaccine seasonal help, but you must have the two types of immunization have more weapons to defend against the virus," he said.

As regards the increase of cases has occurred in recent weeks in the country, the doctor said that these figures are "within expectations, even have been below the data reported elsewhere in Latin America."

The Ministry of Health of Mexico (SSA) reported that up to Dec. 2 are 66,070 confirmed cases of human influenza and 671 deaths from this cause.

"There will be a significant increase in cases at the end of the year and next January, but since we expected this," he said.

The specialist called on people not to let up in this winter season, because there are environmental factors that facilitate the spread of the virus.

Martinez Avila expressed his optimism over the fact that in recent weeks have not been dealt severe cases of influenza A.

"Most cases are treated early with antiviral therapy and appropriate precautionary measures for the patient's family," he said.

On the mutated virus was detected recently in Mexico, the faculty said that one of the first cases were found in the INER, which showed severe symptoms.

"At the time the analysis was sent to America, but did not reach any conclusion because they found it (the mutation) in patients with mild disease," he said.

There is a widespread mutation, he said, is a mutation that appears to be spontaneous.

The expert stressed that there is no clear evidence that this mutation is transmissible to return to more damaging or more virus resistant to drugs, or to change its conformation.

"The same vaccine that is distributed in the country is going to help this mutation in the virus," she added.

At least 8768 people worldwide have died of human influenza, which represents an increase of 942 people during the last week, the World Health Organization (WHO) in its latest report. (Xinhua)

              Dejan open A/H1N1 vaccine refrigerator

              La Jornada
              Thursday, 10 December 2009, p. 42
The head of the Ministry of Health, Jose Angel Cordova, confirmed that "an oversight," Civil Hospital staff Ernesto Meana San Rom?n, Morelos, left open the refrigerator where they keep vaccines against influenza A/H1N1. He did not specify the number of doses that are damaged and said if it looks usable.

Based on early reports that they did arrive, apparently the temperature at which they were made with 10-dose vials of biological each was at risk. However, it will check whether they maintain their effectiveness in preventing the new flu.

In an interview, following the implementation of sectoral campaign "Safe Surgery Saves Lives", Cordova argued that what happened on Tuesday in Morelos, Colima last week was accidental situations.

Colima was not found in people who should have picked up shots at the airport and Morelos, the fridge did not close well. "Something as simple as that happens to us in our homes. While you should not happen, "he said.

On the behavior of the pandemic, reported that 66 thousand have been confirmed 390 cases of influenza A/H1N1, of which 722 are from people who died from the disease. Because the samples are only 10 percent of patients, it would seem that the case fatality rate increased, but not so.
As recommended by the World Health Organization in Mexico confirms the presence of H1N1 virus in all cases of individuals who are hospitalized in serious condition and deaths. Either way, Cordova said, "there has been significant increase in demand for medical services."
In fact, until Monday, said only 15 people were intubated in the national health institutes and highly specialized hospitals. It is a figure significantly lower, as most critical weeks in the third quarter of transmitting the virus came to be from 60 to 100 patients hospitalized in very serious conditions.

On the topic, Santiago Echevarr?a Kate Rice, director of Medical Benefits Social Security, confirmed the trend of the pandemic has been declining. The hospitals agency yesterday that 20 people were hospitalized, unlike the 250 who came to hospital in mid-October.

Cordova said that today begins the second phase of the new flu vaccine, will now be applied to pregnant women with more than six months pregnant, and health personnel.

Health Secretary Jose Angel Cordova Villalobos, said that so far there has been a significant increase in cases of people infected by the virus H1N1 or a great demand in hospitals.

Considered that given the evidence, it could keep the yellow alert throughout the winter season, and even, one could put "green".

He commented that the decline in the number of people infected could be because many were so mild infection, leaving them immunized. "I see no other explanation."

He reported that to date have registered 66 thousand 390 cases in the country, and that 722 people died.

Cordova Villalobos said today it will begin to implement the second batch of H1N1 vaccine to health personnel and pregnant women.

Santiago Echevarria, director of the IMSS Medical Benefit, explained that before the decrease in cases, in almost every state in the country, are in light green.

                Lung damage

According to the National Institute of Health in the United States, influenza A virus H1N1 in depth damage lung tissue in a manner similar to the viruses that caused epidemics of 1918 and 1957, and this was determined after autopsies of 34 patients who died because of this new flu.

The discovery, which will be released in a printed report in February 2010, is the first global set to detail the damage in the airways, and shows evidence of secondary bacterial infections.

Points out that unlike other pandemics, the virus attacks young people with preexisting conditions or who are obese.

Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Health in the U.S., ahead of the report and indicated that through this medical discovery may have a better idea of the disease and how they may treat patients with influenza A H1N1.

Investigators from the Office of Chief Medical Investigators in New York and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, examined the autopsy reports of 34 patients who died of influenza A H1N1.

Health reported 732 deaths from influenza
Regarding the number of people infected, the Health Secretary Jose Angel Cordova Villalobos explained that the figure remains modest because it already is sampled only 10 percent of severe cases in sentinel units. Sun, 13/12/2009 - 15:24

In the Metro remains the prevention campaign against the virus. ArchivoCiudad Mexico-The Health Ministry said the H1N1 pandemic alert is at a stage of stabilization and decreased free full winter season, so it will keep the yellow traffic light, and certainly well come until March when it turns green.

However the SSA to report a "case containment", the reports show that broadcasts every week from 1 to 9 December, 90 deaths were joined in passing with 642, which opened this month to a total of 732 that mainly took place in October, November and part of this last month of the year.

Regarding the number of infected people, their own Health Secretary Jose Angel Cordova Villalobos explained that the figure remains modest because it already is sampled only 10 percent of severe cases in sentinel units.

Therefore, to have 65 thousand 577 cases, the first of December, it happened to 66, 415 cases, according to a report of 9 December. This means an aggregate of 838 additional cases.

"Currently there has been a significant increase in hospital, in fact, the report of the national institutes, such as Respiratory Diseases and Nutrition in Mexico City and highly specialized hospitals and reference, reported 15 patients intubated when he had 60 or 100 ".

The explanation given by the Secretary of Health about why there is no significant increase in cases in this winter period, is that "there was contact with the virus during the first waves of far more people than we think and who acquired infection was very slight or negligible and that this somehow left them vaccinated or naturally immunized, there is no other explanation. "

Of the 732 deaths, a total of 130 were children of 52 days old to 19 years of age. In this sector the highest number of infections and infections, and say, 37 thousand 038.

Still the young people, aged between 20 and 49 years which has the highest mortality rate, with 436. This even though it also records the lowest rate of infections, 24 thousand 442.

On October 27 remains the highest peak of infection, with a thousand 38, which means 626 more cases for the 412, the highest rate in the first wave of April.

The Federal District tops the list of infections with 7 thousand 483; followed by San Luis Potosi with 4 thousand 140, State of Mexico with 3 thousand 987; Nuevo Leon 3 760; Jalisco with 3 thousand 753; Chiapas 3 thousand 648 and Yucatan 3 thousand 238.

                            Mexico, D.F.

Mexico finished 2009 with 823 deaths from the disease a year ago was not even suspected their existence: the influenza A H1N1.

The discovery of the new virus, which last April, shocked not only the country but the entire world, has had important consequences for the Mexican health system, which had to be strengthened emergency to avoid being overtaken by the increasing number of patients.

Among the novelties, the Health Secretariat (SSA) has emphasized the modernization of
state health laboratories, the equipment of intensive care units in major hospitals in the country, training of medical personnel to treat the sick, and the purchase of more than 600 fans to provide artificial respiration of patients most serious .

Nationally, the consequences of the epidemic were mainly economic, not only for its impact on tourism and services, but also in the public sector.

According to its owner, Jose Angel Cordova, SSA has Disbursements 4 thousand 300 million pesos to overcome the epidemic, in addition to disburse approximately 2 thousand 700 million pesos par buying 30 million doses of vaccine against influenza A H1N1.

Despite spending millions, the population for which the unit determined to apply the vaccine on a priority-health personnel and pregnant women, has rejected the biological, citing concerns about its safety.

And although the Secretariat has ensured the safety and efficacy of vaccines, and raises the possibility of applying them to the general population at the low response of the priority groups.

While the agency had made projections for the winter where 10 percent of Mexicans will not catch the virus and about 20 thousand would be hospitalized since late October, which was the month with the highest number of confirmed cases, prevalence began to decline.

However, Cordova said the surveillance will be strengthened through the first week of February and will not change the alert level, currently at yellow, in anticipation of a potential fourth wave of the epidemic in the country.

So far, the Federal District, San Luis Potosi, Mexico state institutions remain as the largest number of confirmed cases of influenza A H1N1.

Despite the decline in new cases of the virus, the SSA has confirmed that the A H1N1 influenza has become dominant, displacing the seasonal influenza.

                            Foreign visitors

The number of foreign visitors received by Mexico this year fell almost 16 percent.

According to the records of the National Migration Institute (INM), between January and November 2009 entered Mexico 16.3 million non-resident aliens in the country, including tourists, business visitors and members of air and sea crews, among others.

The figure in the same period in 2008 amounted to 19.4 million.

The sharpest fall was recorded in May at the start of the epidemic of influenza A H1N1. That month came to the country only 488 thousand foreign visitors, by 1.9 million in the same month of 2008.

The number of tourists visiting the country increased from 9.4 million in 2008 to 8.1 million in this year.

In Quintana Roo the flow of foreign tourists fell from 515 thousand in March to 125 million in May. In Baja California Sur, the figure went from 112 thousand to 47 thousand in the same period.

However, the Minister of Tourism, said the main indicators of tourist activity in Mexico showed clear signs of recovery at the end of 2009.

He said there has been a secondary recovery from influenza A H1N1 in hotel occupancy of the main destinations of the country, as they have reached the level before the health alert.

"Without a doubt, the year 2009 was atypical for tourism in our country. However, we are working to continue being a source of development for Mexico. What's remarkable to this day is that we have begun to recover," he said in press conference on 14 December.
