KIEV, Oct 30 (Reuters) - Ukraine confirmed its first death from H1N1 swine flu on Friday and officials said that a quarantine could be introduced to halt the spread of the virus.

An outbreak of flu and pneumonia has killed 30 people in western Ukraine since mid-October, but officials have until now insisted this was not the H1N1 strain.

"So far, not all the dead were tested (for H1N1)," a health ministry spokeswoman said. "However, tests on one dead (person) proved positive."

"We are considering a quarantine not only in the west, but also across the country because the virus is spreading very fast," Health Minister Vasyl Knyazevych told a news conference, without giving details.

The National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine will hold today, 30 October, an extraordinary meeting on the epidemiological situation in Ukraine.
As the press office of the President, the beginning of the meeting under the chairmanship of Viktor Yushchenko is scheduled for 13:30.

At 13:00, as already reported, Yushchenko will make a statement to the media.

In addition, the Cabinet today at 12:00 will hold an extraordinary meeting on the epidemiological situation that prevailed in the western regions of Ukraine. At the same time will be a meeting of the State Emergency anti-epidemic and antiepizootic Commission.

An epidemic of the A/H1N1 virus, also known as swine flu, has started in Ukraine, Health Minister Vasyl Kniazevych announced at a press conference on Friday.

"Unfortunately, we have to state that an A/H1N1 flu epidemic has in fact started in Ukraine," he said.

The Health Ministry is planning to impose quarantine throughout Ukraine, he said responding a question from Interfax-Ukraine.

"We are considering the possibility of introducing quarantine not only in the western regions but throughout the country because the virus is spreading extremely fast," he said.

Kniazevych said that the Health Ministry would introduce quarantine in kindergartens, schools and in crowded places.

The minister said that it is impossible to find out whether all of 30 people who died of respiratory infections lately actually had the A/H1N1 virus.

"We can only say that 30 people have died during the epidemic," he said.

He also said that 21 specimens had been sent for laboratory tests to the Central Institute of Contagious Diseases in Kyiv, which has confirmed seven cases of the A/H1N1 virus. Out of 12 specimens sent to the Central Sanitary and Epidemiological Station, four proved positive for the A/H1N1 virus.

A total of 951 people have been hospitalized so far, Kniazevych said.

He said that it is virtually impossible to control the spread of the flu because it is an airborne infection.

He said Ukraine will address the World Health Organization and other international organizations for assistance in combating the epidemic of swine flu in its territory.

As reported, thirty-four people, including one child, have died of acute respiratory infections in Ukraine over the last 11 days since October 19, according to the health ministry.

Twelve people died in Lviv region, including a child, twelve in Ternopil region, and six in Ivano-Frankivsk region.

In addition, deaths have been registered in Chernivtsi, Rivne and Zakarpattia regions.

У МОЗ України відбувся брифінг Міністра охорони здоров’я України Василя Князевича, де представникам ЗМІ та громадськості було поінформовано про підтвердження нових випадків захворювання на грип А/Н1N1-каліфорнія.

Брифінг проведено за підсумками візиту до західних областей України. «Україна ввійшла в епідемію грипу, так званого каліфорнійського грипу А/Н1N1», - повідомив міністр.

Він зазначив, що станом на 29 жовтня в Інституті епідеміології та інфекційних хвороб ім..Л.В.Громашевського АМН України проведено аналіз відібраних 22 зразків матеріалу від хворих (м.Тернопіль). В 11 випадках підтверджено грип типу А, із них 7 – грип А/Н1N1-каліфорнія.

Крім того, фахівцями лабораторії вірусології та СНІД Центральної санепідстанції МОЗ України досліджено матеріали ще 8 осіб (м.Львів) з попереднім клінічним діагнозом ГРВІ на наявність вірусу грипу А/Н1N1. Із них 4 – позитивні на наявність вірусу грипу А/Н1N1-каліфорнія (серед досліджених зразків 1 – матеріал померлого).

Василь Князевич повідомив, що сьогодні відбудеться засідання Кабінету міністрів України та РНБО, де на найвищому рівні обговорять проблеми з протистояння епідемії грипу, в тому числі розглянуть питання введення карантинних заходів.

МОЗ України звернулося до міжнародних організацій про консультативну допомогу та з проханням надати необхідну кількість вакцин від грипу А/Н1N1-каліфорнія.

Василь Князевич повідомив, що Україна забезпечена противірусними препаратами у повному обсязі. Він також додав, що відвідав лікарні Тернопільської, Чернівецької областей та провів засідання за участі медиків, місцевої влади, студентів медвузів.

Міністр охорони здоров’я подякував всій медичній спільноті, яка сьогодні сумлінно виконує свій професійний обов’язок та знаходиться в епіцентрі епідемії, надаючи кваліфіковану допомогу хворим.

Василь Князевич закликав не вдаватися до паніки, максимально дотримуватись рекомендацій з профілактики гострих респіраторних інфекцій та вчасно звертатися по медичну допомогу.
