          From WHO update :

The case’s mother (see update, 14 March) died of confirmed avian influenza A(H5N1) virus infection one day prior to onset of illness in the new case.

The child accompanied her mother to the traditional market where live poultry were sold but investigations into the source of infection are ongoing.

So the surving child of 22 months mentioned in post #4 belonged to the 31 year old mother who died, mentioned in post #3.

MOH mentioned "ornamental birds" as a risk factor.

WHO says: they went to a wet market together.

The child fell ill after the mother died, this could mean human-to-human infection?

On the other hand: chickens nearby the house were reported to be confirmed H5N1.

Re: Indonesia - Ministry of Health - Human Bird Flu Reports 2011

The WHO announcement today says that onset of symptoms for the child was a day after the mother died. The mother was admitted to a private clinic on February 23 and hospitalized on the 28th of February and died on March 1. It depends on when the child last had physical contact with her mother. We assume that the mother was in isolation from at least the 28th on. But I think that there was ample time for H2H transmission before the mother was hospitalized.

BIRD FLU CASES IN INDONESIA AND THE WORLD CONTINUE TO DECREASE

                            BY: PUSKOM

                            JANUARY 10, 2012

Throughout there are still cases of bird flu in poultry is the possibility of transmission to humans is still there. This means that, although the number of cases of bird flu in the world and Indonesia continued to decline, bird flu remains a threat that must be wary of.

"The peak number of cases of bird flu in the world occurred in 2006, where there are 115 cases in the world and 55 of these cases occurred in Indonesia. Currently, the number of cases of bird flu continues to decline. In 2011, there were 11 cases in Indonesia, and 60 cases in the world ", said Prof.. dr. Tjandra Yoga Aditama.

Reduction programs Avian Influenza (AI) to be comprehensive in both animals and in humans. Prevention programs are generally conducted in animals, including biosecurity and others. Whereas in humans, outreach done so that people avoid contact with sick poultry, always wash hands with soap used (HWWS), always maintaining health, and medical treatment as soon as the body begins to show signs of illness symptoms. In addition, the readiness of facilities and awareness of health workers must also be constantly prepared and improved.

Responding to case of bird flu that has recently occurred in Jakarta, is now carried out epidemiological investigation (PE) into the field. They are in contact with the patient is being monitored and have been given prophylactic or preventive medicine.

AI suspect case of patients currently being treated in health services (hospitals) will continue to be treated intensively, while waiting for laboratory result certainty. In addition, genetic analysis of cases of avian influenza virus with the results Polymirasea Chain Reaction (PCR) positive, well done carefully.
