MEXICO CITY, Dec. 18 .- Of the 42 cases of acute flaccid paralysis have been presented in Veracruz and Nayarit none have been caused by the application of the vaccine against influenza A H1N1 or which is used to attack the influenza Seasonal also still have no evidence to prove that the disease is Guillain-Barré syndrome, said in an interview with Excelsior Dr. Hugo López-Gatell, deputy general director of epidemiology at the Health Secretariat (SSA).
"No, there is no evidence linking the vaccine against influenza A virus H1N1 or other influenza season, with the occurrence of these cases of acute flaccid paralysis," the official said.
The epidemiologist said that 35 cases of acute flaccid paralysis, only two received the vaccine against seasonal influenza, one of whom was a woman, 48, who died on November 1, and in that case said: "The evidence outbreak study available does not suggest in any way that may have association between paralysis and the vaccine was put to this woman. "
He explained that the concern that the flaccid paralysis may be related to influenza vaccine dates back to 1976, the year in Texas, United States, experienced an outbreak of acute flaccid paralysis, after the population had been applied vaccine against influenza A H1N1.
One of the most robust findings of the investigations were made on the 1976 outbreak is that the vaccine used at that time could have caused acute flaccid paralysis, "he said.
López-Gatell recalled that the influenza virus A H1N1 was first introduced in 1918 and 1919 worldwide, and in 1976 in Texas, and the virus that appeared in Mexico in 2009 "was a recombination of gene segments of different viruses, but expressed antigens and antigen N1 H1. "
Thus, the virus (which appeared in Mexico in 2009) was very similar but not identical to the 1918 nor 1976, he said.
He explained that in Mexico, in 2009, "just in anticipation of this historical background, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended that the 192 member states, including Mexico, which were mounted surveillance systems for acute flaccid paralysis, in particular Guillain-Barre syndrome, in order to timely detect whether or not such a vaccine would result. "
He said that in Mexico, the National Epidemiological Surveillance made some changes to their procedures to "have greater ability to detect acute flaccid paralysis."
This system was implemented in December 2009, just before they start implementing the first vaccine against the H1N1 virus, explained that "the results of such monitoring is very reassuring in the sense that we did not have excess cases of acute flaccid paralysis or Guillain-Barré syndrome. "
The average number of cases of acute flaccid paralysis that occur in Mexico each year is one case per million population, meaning that each year there are between 100 and 120 cases, a figure that, according to López-Gatell, no increased following the application of vaccines against seasonal influenza and H1N1.
On the causes might be behind this outbreak of paralysis in Veracruz and Nayarit replied: "I still do not know." Specified that cases that have appeared in Nayarit not seem related to each other epidemiologically not seem related to the case of Veracruz.
"There is no connection between the two groups, there is no family relationship and know each other, or have traveled from one place to another, it seems not be the same clinical phenomenon," he said.
The official explained that has not been proven that the paralysis is caused by Guillain-Barre syndrome, said that the scenarios suggest that the paralysis could be caused by a very wide range of diseases. "The list of diseases that could cause this evil is about 190 possibilities, usually takes some time to identify the disease that causes paralysis," he said.
Dan discharged 20 patients with poor
XALAPA .- The Ministry of Health of Veracruz reported that 20 of the 33 patients with the Guillain-Barré syndrome already been discharged and the remainder is still in treatment. Meanwhile, Javier Duarte governor reiterated that the outbreak of the disease, which paralyzes the muscles and can lead to death, is completely controlled.
In the region of Orizaba, which registered 23 cases of acute flaccid paralysis and surrounding municipalities, qualified personnel continues to raise environmental samples, among others. The intention, he settled in a statement, is "finding the cause of paralysis." Of the patients who had symptoms of this disease, the agency reported that 20 had been discharged and were in their houses, the rest remains in treatment. The disease was detected in late November in the area of Orizaba, where two patients died as a result. The number of people with symptoms increased to 23 in early December and between 7 and 14 of the same month reached 33.
Javier Duarte Governor requested the support of the media to report that this disease is not contagious. "

Dr. Hugo L?pez Gastel, deputy general director of epidemiology at the Federal Health Ministry reported that in the state of Veracruz reported 35 cases and two deaths from acute flaccid paralysis, which shows the decrease in strength in the extremities.
The first case occurred in the first week of November.
In an interview with Carlos Loret de Mola on Radio Formula, the doctor reported that flaccid paralysis is a syndrome that develops in general a lot of people, the most alarming is poliomyelitis (caused by a virus that does not exist in Latin America since 1994).
However, Lopez Gastel confirmed that in this case is not polio.
The experts acknowledged that already has ruled that the syndrome may be related to the implementation of medical vaccines, although still research to identify the main causes of this outbreak, which could eventually cause paralysis of respiratory muscles, causing death by suffocation if not addressed.

Analyze cases of paralysis in Veracruz
Agency (Reform) Pablo Anaya Rivera, Secretary of Health of Veracruz, acknowledged that the entity recorded an outbreak to occur more than two cases in a given area
Written by Margarita Vega Mendoza
MEXICO, DF 18-Dec .- Health Services of Veracruz have confirmed the detection of 34 cases of flaccid paralysis in the state that might be linked to Guillain Barre syndrome.
Pablo Anaya Rivera, Secretary of Health of Veracruz, acknowledged that the entity recorded an outbreak to occur more than two cases in a given area.
The symptoms, said in a radio interview, are similar to those of Guillain Barre syndrome, characterized by a disorder that causes severe acute flaccid paralysis and in extreme cases death.
Although the syndrome is associated, among other things, with the implementation of the influenza vaccine, the local official rejected any link between the immunity applies in the state and the outbreak, as only two of the 34 affected the had received it.
"These are bold claims. It has carefully studied all the cases to state and federal level and in only two cases had agreed that vaccination," said"This disease is not contagious. Just extreme measures in people with respiratory or digestive problems in people who have symptoms described so they can go to a clinical care unit."
Of those affected, he said, 60 percent has been discharged.
For his part, Undersecretary of Prevention and Health Promotion of the Federal Ministry of Health, Mauricio Hern?ndez, said that while cases of paralysis in Veracruz are being studied, it is most likely not related to Guillain Barre syndrome.
"We're investigating, but seems not to be Guillain Barr? because the symptoms are not related to what is normally associated with the syndrome, and type of bacteria that produces, or influenza vaccine. [B]We are still investigating," he said in an interview.[/B
]"Not a typical paralysis of Guillain Barre syndrome, which is down, but a simultaneous paralysis in upper and lower extremities, so it's probably not Guillain Barre syndrome," he said.
Guillain Barr? syndrome occurs when, after being infected by bacteria or viruses, a person's immune system starts attacking the body instead of protecting him.
If not addressed early, the syndrome can incapacitate the sufferer, or even lead to death.
Symptoms are described as difficulty walking or moving parts of the body, loss of muscle strength up to and including the paralysis of the affected members, including the muscles that allow breathing

Tepic, Nayarit News- Do not panic, confirms the Secretary of Health, Nayarit, that the alleged cases of chronic muscle flaccidity detected in Bahia De Banderas Vallarta and San Blas is merely a misunderstanding. These cases are concentrated in Orizaba Veracruz, 1200 km from Nayarit.
Cases appeared 1000 km. from here. There are many diseases of muscle flaccidity, the best known is called Guillain Barre, which is a viral problem but there is no direct human infection or persons and have mentioned two different versions by the Ministry of Health Veracruz who mentioned 30 cases and epidemiology 33 in any of both situations we are talking about a disease not yet clarified.

We mentioned here in San Blas in the month of Sept. there were 7 cases with a picture of myositis or muscle pain that began with flu symptoms and underwent a series of signs showing that it was a type of influenza. Influenza Type B was detected inn 4 of 7 patients gives us the idea that 7 of them had the same problem because the clinical picture was similar but was very mild. Only one was hospitalized and the others are well.
We have very wide coverage for Influenza vaccination. We are almost to 100,000 shots.

So the seven cases from September from Nayarit are not related to whatever is happening in Orizaba, and instead were an unrelated influenza B outbreak? Odd. It seems strange to be able to mistake a "mild" flu B outbreak for AFP.
So the overall case count appears to just be 35, and the start of this "outbreak" moves up to mid-November.
Re: Veracruz and Nayarit- Flaccid Paralysis in the region of Orizaba, 42 sick, 2 dead
35 in Orizaba, I believe. Though post 49 says 42 cases reported in Orizaba and Nayarit. Nayarit now denies. There apparently have been cases in other states reported. All preliminary, as they are still putting the numbers together. It's all quite confusing at this time.

In the case of death, the doctor confided that it was a complication of the disease, since patients had no underlying disease as well as flaccid paralysis.
