Two die of swine flu, dengue fever combination

Two patients infected with both influenza A (H1N1) virus and dengue fever have died in Hanoi, Nguyen Hong Ha, deputy head of the National Institute of Tropical and Infectious Diseases, said on Wednesday.

Ha said both patients had been admitted to the institute last week in critical condition.

The nation?s first two patients with the combination of swine flu and dengue detected early this month had also been treated at the institute. They have been discharged after full recovery.

According to the Ministry of Health, the World Health Organization (WHO) so far has reported seven cases with both dengue fever and swine flu with one death in Barbados, an island in the West Indies.

Vietnam has so far recorded 41 deaths related to swine flu since May. A 16-year-old girl who was six-months pregnant in the Mekong Delta province of Kien Giang was the latest victim, the ministry reported.

The ministry?s Preventive Health and Environment Department said a meeting on H1N1 vaccines distribution among eight Southeast Asian countries will be held Thursday in Bangkok.

The 1.2 million doses of vaccines that WHO will sponsor for Vietnam are expected to arrive next month.

The US will support the countries with syringes and training for H1N1 vaccination campaigns, the department said.

In the meantime, GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) Vietnam Company has applied for a license to import and distribute the vaccines, according to the Drug Administration of Vietnam, which also said all procedures will be completed as soonest possible.

Vietnam plans to import 500,000 doses of the vaccines as a preventive measure for high-risk population segments like pregnant women and patients with chronic diseases.

Pregnant woman dies of swine flu in delta

A pregnant woman from the Mekong Delta province of Kien Giang, six months into her term, has become the 41st victim of swine flu, a health official said November 11.

Dr. Nguyen Huy Nga, chief of the Preventive Health and Environment Department, said at a meeting of the National Steering Board of Human Flu Prevention that the 16-year-old developed a fever, cough, and sore throat on November 3 and bought medicines to treat herself.

Four days later, when her condition worsened, she was taken to the province’s General Hospital where she died on November 9.

Tests carried out by the Ho Chi Minh City-based Pasteur Institute later confirmed she had swine flu.

Flu-related hospitalizations continue to occur nationwide, with 17 provinces so far reporting deaths.

Nguyen Tran Hien, director of the Central Institute of Hygiene Epidemiology, said the National Steering Board for Vaccination against H1N1 has decided to vaccinate 1.2 million women who are three or more months pregnant.

According to a Pasteur Institute survey, 60 per cent of people with flu live in HCMC, half of them aged between 10 and 19.

The president of the institute, Tran Ngoc Huu, warned that the possibility of the H1N1 and H5N1 viruses combining is very high with winter approaching.

Comment: More on the 41st death, a pregnant 16 yr old girl and please note Pasteur Institute's president expressing his concern for 'high' potential for H5N1 and H1N1 to recombo this winter-JCR and query: Is anyone counting the deaths of unborn babies of 2nd/3rd trimester otherwise survivables as human deaths? If so, wouldn't Vietnam's death toll be higher?)

Viet authorities in these previous posts are indicating there are at least 4 patients/2 deaths of H1N1/dengue combo deaths, and concern expressed at the Pasteur Institute of H1N1/H5N1 coinfection possibilities increasing.

So...Vietnamese authorities in these previous two posts are indicating there are at least 4 patients/2 deaths of H1N1/dengue combo deaths, and concern expressed at the Pasteur Institute of H1N1/H5N1 coinfection possibilities increasing.

query: would the hemorrhagic symptoms for the two pregnant dead moms-to-be have been presentations of dengue or H1N1 or both perhaps since the health officials spoke of co-infections?

Vietnam confirms 40th death from A/H1N1 flu

Health authorities on Nov. 10 confirmed one more death from A/H1N1 flu, bringing the total number of fatalities to 40.

The victim was a 17-year-old girl from Dong Anh district, Hanoi. She showed signs of fever, cough and pain in the chest and was sent to the district hospital on Nov. 5 and then transferred to the higher-level hospital of Thanh Nhan and later on to the national hospital for communicable and tropical diseases as her condition worsened.

At the hospital, she tested positive for the A/H1N1 flu virus and was treated with Tamiflu and antibiotics. Despite intensive treatment, the girl died on Nov. 7.

As of the end of Nov. 10, Vietnam has reported 10,791 H1N1 cases of the super-flu and has already discharged 10,549 of them.
