He went to classes at Rancocas Valley Regional High School in Mount Holly every day last week and showed no sign of illness, school officials said.

But on Saturday, 17-year-old Andre Mendez's temperature shot up to 104 degrees and he was having convulsions when paramedics arrived, according to the officials.

Mendez, a sophomore, died at Virtua Memorial Hospital in Mount Holly later that day
, school authorities said today, leaving health officials with a mystery they hope to solve tomorrow or Wednesday when lab tests are to be released by the state.

News of the death saddened students and parents and set off concerns today that Mendez may have had the H1N1 virus that state health officials say has claimed 18 lives in New Jersey since the first case in June.

"Though there may be rumors, the cause of death is unconfirmed," said Michael Moskalski, the high school superintendent and principal. "H1N1 is a possibility, but we're awaiting the results from the cultures and testing."

Deaths involving the virus typically come days after a person is infected and are caused when his or her lungs fill with fluid, health officials said.

Those from the seasonal flu often occur one or two weeks after a person's initial infection, because the person has developed a secondary bacterial infection, such as a staph infection, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The test results will be released to the Burlington County Health Department, which will share them with school officials.

In the meantime, Moskalski said that he will ask the school board at a meeting tomorrow night to authorize a school-based clinic to provide H1N1 vaccinations, probably in the gymnasium.

If approved, the shots would likely be given by the county health department by the end of November, he said.

"We have been sanitizing hard surfaces weekly and that will be increased to nightly so we can be sure the buildings will be clean," Moskalski said. But the flu "is spread through the air so that might not make a difference.

"We're doing everything that has been recommended," he said. "The goal this fall is to keep the schools open.

News of Mendez's death was shared with the students and staff members over the school intercom and counselors were made available.

"We have a crisis-intervention team that goes into place to provide the counseling services in a safe room for all grieving students," said Moskalski.

"If additional resources are needed, we can call on other districts to send people."

According to school staff, Mendez was in class all last week and appeared to be "fine on Friday. They didn't notice anything unusual and he didn't go to the nurse's office," the superintendent said.

The Burlington County health Department in Westampton will hold H1N1 flu shot clinics to vaccinate residents in priority groups from 2 to 4 p.m. on Nov. 6, 13 and 20, said Loretta O'Donnell, a county spokeswoman.

The groups include children 6 months to 5 years old, pregnant woman, caregivers of children and health care workers.

Vaccinations will be given throughout the Mount Laurel school system tomorrow through Thursday, O'Donnell said.

Additional clinics will be scheduled as the vaccine becomes available.

"This is a long-term campaign that will continue for months until everyone who wants an H1N1 vaccination has received one," said county Public Health Coordinator Robert Gogats.

MOUNT HOLLY - A 17-year-old Rancocas Valley Regional High School student died Saturday after he had a seizure at his Parliament Drive home, leaving his family and health officials looking for answers in his sudden death.

Andres Mendez was pronounced dead Saturday afternoon at Virtua Memorial Hospital Burlington County in Mount Holly. The 10th-grader was in school Friday and had not been seriously ill, family members said.

"They don't really know what happened," said Tanya Mendez, 19, of Mount Holly, who lived with her brother and their mother, Alice Mendez, in the township. "All we know right now is that he had a seizure at home and they couldn't bring him back."

County health officials said they expect to learn today what caused the teenager's death once they receive medical test results, said county spokeswoman Loretta O'Donnell. She said a sample went to the state lab Monday morning.

Tanya Mendez said her brother was in good health, but had a heart problem when he was much younger. She said he had complained of a sore throat the day before he died and woke up Saturday with a high fever.

"He was burning up and his girlfriend gave him cold compresses, but within 20 minutes he was having a seizure and she called 911."

The RV school community was mourning the loss of one of their own Monday. Many students heard rumors over the weekend that a fellow student had died and administrators confirmed the news when they returned to school.

The school's crisis response team was made available to students and staff, said district spokeswoman Tanya Jackson. The team, including counselors, set up a grief room at the school where students could come and talk about their feelings, she said.

Jackson said there were no plans to close the school in the coming days.

She acknowledged that administrators had heard and were aware of the concerns that Mendez had died of complications from H1N1 virus. He was tested for the virus, family members said.

"We don't know the cause of death yet," Jackson said. "We are waiting to hear."

The Mendez family is also waiting.

"We're anxious to find out what happened. We are still in shock," said Tanya Mendez, who spent part of Monday printing out photos of her younger brother in preparation for his funeral. "This all came out of nowhere."

She said her brother was kind and loving. He liked watching Ultimate Fighting on television. Andres Mendez was the godfather of her 1-year-old son, Riley, and helped the family after their father died 2 1/2 years ago of kidney failure.

The Mendezes had family pictures done Friday, the day before he died, Tanya Mendez said. The family is making funeral arrangements today.

Although he had left RV about two years ago, he had returned to school in September as a sophomore and was doing well.

"He was a good student and loved being there. He had really turned his life around," said his sister, fighting back tears. "I looked up to him and I never got to tell him that."

17-year-old From South Jersey Dies Of H1N1
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) ― State health officials say tests have confirmed that a 17-year-old Burlington County boy has died due to complications from swine flu.

The teen attended Rancocas Valley Regional High School in Mount Holly.

Principal Michael Moskalski said Monday that the boy was in school on Friday and showed no apparent signs of the flu. He died on Saturday. His name was not released.

Moskalski says the school is hoping to hold a vaccination clinic next week, despite the ongoing shortage of the vaccine.

According to the state health department, New Jersey has ordered 1.3 million doses of the H1N1 vaccine and has received 400,000 so far.
