Wednesday evening, confirmed the incidence of No. 70 of bird flu, 4-year-old boy from the eastern province of Kafr Saqr and his condition was good and stable.

Egyptian boy contracts bird flu
A four-year-old boy in Egypt has been diagnosed with the potentially deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu.

The Egyptian health ministry says the boy is from the Nile Delta region and has been in contact with sick poultry.

His condition is described as stable. Since bird flu in Egypt first appeared in 2006, there have been 70 cases of infection and 26 people have died.

Egypt is the country worst affected by bird flu outside of Southeast Asia, with a spate of new cases since spring.

The boy who is from Sharqiya province was taken to a local hospital suffering from high fever and flu symptoms, an official from the health ministry told the Egyptian news agency Mena.

Later he was transferred to Cairo where he tested positive for the H5N1 strain of bird flu and received anti-viral drug treatment.

Egypt has seen a surge in cases of avian flu in recent weeks. Ten new infections have been reported since the beginning of April. That is more than the total number of cases in 2008.

The World Health Organization has called for an investigation into why many of those contracting the disease had been children.

Millions of Egyptians raise poultry for their own requirements or to generate some extra income. The birds are often kept on roof tops and come into close proximity to humans.

CAIRO, May 14 (Reuters) - A four-year-old Egyptian boy has contracted the highly pathogenic H5N1 bird flu virus, bringing to 70 the number of human avian flu cases in the most populous Arab country, the state news agency MENA reported.
Egypt has been hit harder by the virus than any other country outside Asia and has seen a surge of cases in recent weeks. Ten new human infections have been reported since April 1 -- more than the country saw in all of 2008.
The latest sufferer from the virus is from the Nile Delta province of Sharkiya, MENA said.
The avian flu virus rarely infects people, but experts say they fear it could mutate into a form that humans could easily pass to one another, sparking a pandemic that could kill millions. Some 26 Egyptians have died after contracting the virus.
Most of those infected had come into contact with infected domestic birds in a country where 5 million households raise poultry as a significant source of food and income.
MENA reported that the boy, believed to have contracted the virus from sick household birds, had entered hospital suffering from a high fever and showing flu symptoms.
He was being treated with the anti-viral drug Tamiflu and was in a stable condition, MENA added.
Last month, Egypt ordered the culling of all the country's 300,000 to 400,000 pigs as a precaution against the new H1N1 influenza strain, also known as swine flu, which has infected nearly 6,000 people in more than 30 countries. The new virus has not been detected in Egypt so far.
Since 2003, the more deadly H5N1 bird flu virus has infected more than 400 people in 15 countries and killed more than 250. CAIRO, May 15 (Reuters) - A three-year-old Egyptian boy has contracted the highly pathogenic H5N1 bird flu virus, the 71st case in the populous Arab country, the state-run news agency MENA said on Friday.
It is the second case in as many days in Egypt, which has seen a surge in infections this year.
A spokesman for the Health Ministry said the boy showed symptoms including a high temperature after coming into contact with domestic poultry, MENA reported.
The boy, from Mahalla in the Nile Delta north of Cairo, was in a stable condition in hospital and being treated with Tamiflu, the spokesman added.
Since 2003 the avian influenza virus has infected more than 400 people in 15 countries and killed 256 of them. It has killed or forced the culling of more than 300 million birds across Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Europe.

CAIRO, May 18 (Reuters) - A 4-year-old Egyptian girl has died after contracting the highly pathogenic H5N1 bird flu virus, Egypt's state news agency MENA said on Monday.

The girl, from the Nile Delta province of Daqahlia, brings the number of human cases of avian influenza in Egypt to 72, MENA said. Of those, 27 have died.

Egyptian girl dies of bird flu



CAIRO - A FOUR-YEAR-OLD girl on Monday died from the H5N1 strain of bird flu, bringing to 27 the number of deaths from the disease in Egypt, the health ministry said.
'Nada al-Ahmed Reda Yunes, four years, from the Nile Delta town of Meet Ghamr died after contracting the disease", ministry spokesman Abdel Rahman Shahin told the official MENA news agency.
The girl started showing symptoms on May 9 but was only taken to hospital on Sunday, Mr Shahin said.
She tested positive for the disease on Monday and died the same day.
Her case brings to 72 the number of people infected with avian influenza in Egypt. She is the 27th person to die from disease since it was first identified in the country in 2006. Most of the victims in Egypt have been young children or women, who are generally in charge of looking after poultry in rural areas. -- AFP
