Indonesian boy tests positive for bird flu

JAKARTA, Oct 11 (Reuters) - A 12-year-old Indonesian boy has tested positive for bird flu, and is being treated in a Jakarta hospital, a health ministry official said on Thursday.

The ministry's bird flu centre's Muhammad Nadirin said it was not clear how the boy from Tanggerang city in West Java, contracted the virus, but some chickens had died in his neighbourhood.

The most common way to contract the deadly virus is through sick fowl.

The disease is endemic in the bird population in most parts of Indonesia, where millions of backyard fowl are kept in close proximity to humans and where education campaigns often do not reach remote areas.

Muchtar Ichsan, a doctor at the hospital, said the boy has been taken to an isolated room and was on a respiratory device.

Indonesia has 109 confirmed cases of human bird flu, 87 of them fatal, the highest in the world.

Update on the nurses of Linda

Two Treatment Workers Suspect Bird Flu

                  October 11, 2007:

Pekanbaru (Lampost) : Two hospital medical staffers at (RS) RS Awal Bros, Pekanbaru, have been stated as suspect bird flu. Previously they had direct contact with a bird flu patient that died. It was determined that the two medical personnel that had conducted the standard bird flu patient handling (SOP) had direct contact. The two nurses with the initials NI and MR are now still under strict supervision.

"Before the two medical staffers suffered a high fever of 38 degrees. Although it is now passed off as standard operational bird flu handling, at this time he/she is automatically stated to be a bird flu suspect, " said Gizi Kasubdin, Medical Service, Riau Province Health Agency, Burhanudin Agung, in Pekanbaru, Rabu (10-10).

Although he mentioned that the case is NOT evidence of the presence of early contagion of the bird flu virus from human to human. During all these years, the diffusion of the virus has been from bird to human.

"Despite this, the status of this second medical staffer has now received further careful individual attention from the Health Department (Depkes)," said Agung.

Agung also said that although they are bird flu suspect, at this time the two medical staffers (at?) RS Awal Bros was not dispatched to individual bird flu patient isolation treatment space in RSUD Arifin Ahmad. Because the condition of the two originally improved.

"At this time there is no cause for the nurses to stay overnight in the bird flu isolation space. The matter is permitted by their condition, because at this time they are beginning to become healthy and have ceased suffering more clinical symptoms. At this time there are enough nurses monitoring the paramedic in own RS Awal Bros," said Agung.

Last Friday in town at RSUD, a patient named Linda (44) died. The diagnosis of the sample mentioned that the resident, a woman from Subdistrict Rumbai Pekanbaru, was positively infected with the bird flu virus.

Before being referred to RSUD Arifin Ahmad, Linda, the deceased, at the time was attended in RS Chevron and RS Awal Bros. Nevertheless the second hospital that handled the patient did not know if she was infected with the bird flu virus.

Later is was known that the victim was infected with the bird flu virus after being reconciled to RSUD Arifin Ahmad. Her condition continued to become mortally weak, finally this woman died paro (translates as half). Linda, was attended by the two nurses.

                  Note, worth to repeat:

"Although he mentioned that the case is NOT evidence of the presence of early contagion of the bird flu virus from human to human"

Not sure about the translation, I am going to sleep now, but in the original text it says "tidak", means "no" or "not". This should be checked.

[This is my word for word translation of the same sentence]

"Even though such was the case important no bold mention matter that as if proof early presence contagion virus bird flu from human being to human being. As long as this spreading virus [up to now/only] to be known from poultry to human being."

[Seems to make quite a difference if you put "up to now" vs. "only".]

                      Adding Edit:
O.K. Here's another translation using different definitions of the same exact words:

"Although such was the case, Agung not at all bold call matter that as proof early beginning existance contagion virus flu from human being to human being."
