TUCSON - California has declared an outbreak of pertussis or whooping cough. It's the worst outbreak in 50 years. The disease has claimed the lives of eight infants in that state.
News 4 went to find out the number of cases in Arizona which are slightly higher than last year. Should you be concerned?...
...Arizona reported 209 cases so far this year. The average is 200 to 300 for the entire year. And the peak season is July through October...
...The reported numbers in Pima County this month are normal, however.
"Whooping cough generally cycles in 3 to 5 years, every 3 to 5 years, so we are due in Arizona to have another big year," says Graham Briggs with the Pinal County Health Department.
Up north in nearby Pinal County, they're seeing more patients.
"We've received 24 reports of whooping cough in Pinal County to this point this year. That's compared to about 5 reports at this time last year."..
